Props of page 71!
🕑 Added 2024-09-09 16:41:58 +0000 UTCDear Patrons, now I want to explain you the props you saw on page 71!
The Neapolitan coffee maker (cuccumella/cuccuma in Neapolitan) is a type of coffee maker invented by the Frenchman Morize in 1819, it then spread throughout Italy, used for home preparation of coffee. Starting from about the middle of the 20th century it was gradually replaced by the more modern moka coffee maker, faster and easier to use.
In 1880 (the year of the flashback) it was already in use throughout Italy, and moreover in Sicily which had been united with Naples in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies! The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies was an absolute monarchy that governed southern Italy and Sicily between 1816 and 1861, the kingdom of Naples and the kingdom of Sicily, so this coffee maker was found in every home in southern Italy in 1880!
Sofia is flipping the coffee maker, because it is the final gesture to make the coffee.
I found a video on YouTube, short and with English subtitles, where you can see the process! https://youtu.beogFPRFwr4M?si=iAcfk53FeDi-pOr
(if the link doesn't work, the title is: The cuccuma: the old rite of Neapolitan coffee)
On the second page you will find the coffee grinders that were used to fill the coffee machine, I found so many at the vintage market, even a pencil sharpener! It was adorable! The shavings should be "ground" and come out of the drawer, I was really tempted to buy it! I also found those marble "pine cones" that were placed at home at the end of the stone handrails. Beautiful! And then we have a kitchen bowl with its weights.
I hope you like these curiosities and stories, I want this comic to be educational too XD

Oh very much. :P And she was happy seeing me and my sister make our own overcomplicated way to make sugar drinks! We just loved cranking that thing. XD

I know that movie, but I never saw it premiere or be shown on TV around here. The most similar movie I’ve seen is "The Great Mouse Detective" (policías y ratones in Spanish).

So much, I spend at least one day a week at the antiques market, and sometimes I look for others around. In the UK I spent a whole day in a town called Wallingford because there are two huge shops! And not still full... the next day I went to London to Portobello Road! 😁 I remember when I went there for the first time in 1994, because I had in my heart the favorite Disney film of my childhood Bedknobs and Broomsticks 🪄 When I went back after 30 years I always had the song in my head! I don't know what to say, maybe I have already lived in the past and I have a magical nostalgia 😌

And was grandma happy to have her coffee with sugar? 😂

What a clever little invention. I first thought she was just cleaning it, but now I see she's using a rag to protect her hands because it's hot! The video works, thankfully. :) Oh, I recognize the grinders! My grandma has one, but we used it to grind down sugar cubes when I was little. :P The scale and weights I recognize too! My mom got those, although the scales are of a different, more spartan model.

Do you really like old things, don't you?
