Sure, the King had united the areas around under his protection against invasions from the south, but why put the court at such risk? As Adria rode away from the dark, scary south, she thought about how she would move the capital when she became Queen, twisting Etienne’s arm until he built her a castle in the north, far from whatever dangers lay south of the forest.
Feeling a little vulnerable, she remained on the path as she neared the castle, following it around to the west, the mighty walls on her right. She continued along the path until she reached the gates. The huge metal bars had been lifted, and there was a meager stream of people queueing to get into Evenguard. Most of the commoners were surely coming for the Winter Solstice celebrations, or to see their families. Adria scowled as she rode past a group of peasants, walking beside her with their possessions on a mule. She hated to think what diseases these vermin were bringing with them, but didn’t offer them the time of day, keeping her head high and her horse moving quickly.
As she neared the gate, she pulled out a parchment with her credentials on it, marked with her father’s seal. The guard at the gate barely looked at the paper, seeing the seal and getting out of Adria’s way. The girl smirked at the grumbling of the peasants as they watched her skip past them into the city.
Despite its questionable position in the kingdom, the castle of Evenguard was situated strategically atop a hill. In fact, the whole town around it was built on the hill, and the gates surrounded the base of the land mass. To the south, the castle joined the wall, with a gate that connected to a sheer mountain face. This is where Adria had left the capital, having ridden down the winding path down the hill. She knew that any assault on the castle from that angle would be a military disaster, as the large open plain facing the hillside was exposed, and in easy range for the castle archers.
To the north, a winding road snaked around the town as it worked its way up the hill to the castle. Adria rode past the squabble at the very bottom of the hill, the houses and the people getting cleaner and richer as she ascended.
Beneath her, Rhancar had managed to position himself as the giantess had waited for her papers to be checked. He had managed to crawl out from under Adria’s ass, so that when she had started to ride into the town, he had been leaning against her butt. As it trotted on past him, he started to fall again, but this time, there was nothing below but the staggering drop to the cobbled stone ground.
The cold air whipped past him as he fell, but he was helpless to protect himself. All he could do was put his hands out to try to save his head from the impact. As he neared the earth, he flinched, shutting his eyes and praying for a miracle. He waited for the pain of landing, but it never came. When he finally dared to look down, he couldn't believe what he was seeing.
He was floating, somehow levitating just millimeters above the certainly freezing stones. His hands were pushed out, and it was as if he was keeping himself off the ground, with the sheer power of his will. He suddenly became aware of the cold on his bare skin, and he lost the electrifying fear that he had been feeling. The moment he did, he crashed into the ground, his chin smashing against the cobblestone.
A sudden feeling of total exhaustion filled his body, and Rhancar felt himself drift off into blackness.

‘We need to talk about that emissary,’ King Harold said, entering his chambers and letting his robe drop to the ground. He was still wearing his trousers and shirt, but didn’t need the warmer cloak in the blisteringly hot bedroom. He was about to continue, but stopped mid-sentence when he laid eyes on his wife.
Elenor was sprawled on their bed, her skin bare against the furs that adorned it. She now looked at him with the same eyes, the same pout, and Harold forgot the stress and frustration that he had felt only moments ago. He was disarmed, and just like that, Elenor sat up, watching the helpless man continue to be fixed on her wobbling breasts.
‘You’re right, Harold,’ she said, lifting a fur to delicately cover her body, ‘We need to talk.’
The king had to blink a few times to gather his thoughts again, as Elenor laughed at his shameful blubbering. He finally managed to get his thoughts together.
‘What is this I hear about an emissary from Methisia?’ he finally asked.
‘Oh, that was just some little bug, making up stories,’ Elenor smirked, ‘What does it matter anyway?’
‘What does it matter?’ Harold repeated, ‘Do you know how large the Methesian empire is? Do you know how close they are to the south?’
‘So what?’ Elenor asked, ‘The Balancar Fief buffers us from them, doesn’t it?’
‘I haven’t heard from the Balancars in over a month,’ Harold replied, showing his worry about the keep to their south, the only barrier between his kingdom and the savages that inhabited the desert of the continent.
‘Then what? Those pesky Methisian’s will be so enraged by our actions that they invade? We can crush them in battle,’ Elenor yawned.
‘I pray that one day there will be more behind those eyes than air,’ Harold spat, ‘The Methisian armies would drown us with their numbers.’
‘Can numbers break stone walls?’ Elenor asked.
‘They can if they weigh more than our kingdom combined,’ Harold replied, ‘A military conflict against them would mean certain death, either by sword, or by starvation when every inch of the lands around is covered by a besieging army.’
‘Well … figure something out,’ Elenor said, bored, ‘That’s your duty afterall.’
Harold was at a loss for words, and shook his head as he stormed out of his room. Picking up his guards as he did, and leaving the Queen alone in the chamber again.
She waited for his footsteps to fade, before standing and wrapping one of the robes around her shoulders. She crossed to one side of the room and gently pulled back a tapestry that hung like a curtain, revealing a small door behind. She pressed her fingers into the otherwise bare wooden door, and little slots pressed in, shifting an intricate mechanism of cogs inside which culminated in a click.
The door swung open and the Queen removed her fingers from the wood, allowing the pieces to spring back into place, re-forming the seemingly flat surface of the door. She stepped through into the darkness and shut the door behind her. The tapestry fell over it and the room was empty once more.
