John Doe

Oliver reminds me of Jimmy's (Carter) brother Billy. :-) *There has to be at least one in every family.

John Doe

My brother is a scum-ball, I would've just thrown him into the instance. :-) I am pretty sure that one of his ex-GF or wives have offed him by now (if the human race is lucky). Heh!

Undead Writer

Right! Thanks!

Timothy Nugent

Tomorrow's chapter is titled "The Screwup." One guess as to who it's referencing.

DH

Of all of the storylines that I’m worried about the most it is Oliver outing this whole operation and bringing Mr.CIA out to AZ. We have so much time between now and the start of the apocalypse that the uncertainty of it all genuinely hurts.

Half Life

I'd cut Oliver like a bad habit. But then, in a survival scenario, idiots who create problems are worse than enemies.

Timothy Nugent

Dang, I'm glad you're not MY brother. Lol

Half Life

The right thing to do is let Oliver clear the scenario on his own, or (hopefully) die trying.

Josh

Honestly I think Oliver is understandable and Blake the unreasonable one. He wants to contribute and him killing himself is not set in stone (I call Gouvernement shenanigans on that btw), especially if he still wants to move forward after getting all the info from Blake. He is his own person and Blake needs to respect his decisions, Oliver is not gonna have a happy life if he can't choose that life

Eyke

He should for sure try to get his friends to aim for dual-classing. Like, obviously the best bet would be to have a hundred or so omni-classers, but especially the friend with the constant psi-headaches should consider also getting himself some chi-regeneration to combat that. iirc getting ten achievements was kind of a big deal for our dude that isn't gonna be so easy for others (since he took, like, threeish unique "First" achievements), but even just having a dozen pairs of tri-class elites leveled up a couple times before The Day would make a huge difference for the faction.

Timothy Nugent

Oliver is Blake's older brother with Parkinsons disease.

Undead Writer

Thanks for the chapter! Who is Oliver again? Trying to remember names here

well power leveling isn't a thing in this series. you get nano based on how hard you struggle in fights. so unless he's going to just *hand* them nano, which he won't be doing, then they've got to pull their own weight. He *did* mention that when they can start throwing fireballs is dependent on them, and would take about a month

I think maybe i didnt explain myself well. My main issue is that Blake, despite being a 28 year old apocalypse survivor seems to be a bit delusional thinking these are the same people he knows. There isn’t really any self reflection of him squaring their future selves with their present. The tactical question can be resolved later, but i so far dont really have any clue what he actually plans to do with these friends. Is he just collecting them? Is he going to powerlevel them?

Sean

True, there's a definite living in the past vibe from Blake. We'll see how it goes but I doubt we'll see growth in that mindset before the initiation happens.

MagicWafflez

yeah, but i also think that blake is treating him like glass, which isn't healthy either. There is a *huge* difference between his brother killing himself because the world ended and he has a debilitating incurable disease and he killed a goblin which is a person. and him having hope, a stable family situation, and a plan for the future. This isn't going to break oliver and blake needs to see that. Oliver in the first life probably thought he would be a burden on his family forever and it's better if he dies... that's not the case now, but blake can't pivot and he needs to.

MagicWafflez

ehhh, idk. blake has mentioned several times that he's lonely. and also, them not remembering him doesn't negate the fact that *he* knows and cares about *them*. It would be less realistic if he *was* only looking at them from a 'what they bring to the table' perspective. I think their relationship is pretty natural, kids that age, 18~22 are still kind of in the friend making years, where you can meet a new person at freshman orientation and have them as your long lost best bro. Honestly, I think author nailed it. I especially like them meeting each other's parents. It has that late high school/early college feel of 'my kid is old enough to stay up late and meet new people, but I'm still going to make them breakfast because they're still kids.' Maybe he could pad the chapter with blake describing that he feels better having someone to talk to about scenarios/combat with, but i think that will come when Montgomery and Jeff have some experience with them and can relate. Notice how much Blake edits what he talks about with his family to make them not worry... He needs people he can talk to, he's not a robot and this isn't a game.

David Ford

Fun to see things taking shape but i have two comments: 1) It isnt really clear why Blake is connecting with his friends, or why he thinks they will be useful. I get the impression that these new friends are pretty average individuals, and the tragedy of losing their loved ones pushed them to be powerful. So far neither really seems worth his time or effort. Similarly the friendship doesn’t really feel natural. These guys don’t know Blake and he doesn’t really know this version of them either. I think some internal monologue addressing these points would be beneficial, just IMO. 2) Oliver is a pain in the ass, and this new development was very predictable. I hope we see him grow from it. I hope this comment comes across as constructive, i am enjoying the story!

Sean

Ah, the classic fuck around and find out older brother. He hasn't really been a great person to read about, but I hope he'll get a 'come to jesus' moment.
