Gabriel Melnik

The problem is that while combat classes are bussin most crafters can't even get their class nor grind it.

Undead Writer

Thanks for the chapter!

Timothy Nugent

For Blake, sure. He can close the distance instantly with Spatial Step and interupt their casts with his sword, shield, or mind blast. When he can't do that, things don't work out the best.

Mana user. Feels like System has classified them into [Easy Kills].

Timothy Nugent

When you say magic, do you mean mana user, or all four energy types? He's also level one, and fighting higher level opponents.

lenkite

Mana seems pretty heavily nerfed. Ridiculously long cool-downs and you cannot even call yourself a [Glass Cannon] to compensate. A Mana caster appears to be the weakest of the paths.

PrimordialJay

I'm more just wondering how he'll get the right kind of people in the future. You have shown that people get knowledge from the system to help, but it's definitely better to have people who are interested in whatever role they take.

Timothy Nugent

He wants to build the faction town up a bit more before he does any sort of mass recruitment. Right now, there's not much infrastructure to handle an influx of people, and there's not many crafting buildings. Enchanting, tailoring, alchemy, and many other workshops have yet to appear. They require a higher level faction hall to reach.

PrimordialJay

Could he hold some kind of LARP/Renaissance fair on his property? Might be a good way to build his faction. Have some kind of craft competitions as well.

Timothy Nugent

Also, most people aren't cut out to kill. Nothing wrong with being a crafter. You can eventually get rich without any danger. Sure, your personal stats won't go as high as a combat classer, but high level crafted gear can make up for that, and you don't have to risk your life daily.

Timothy Nugent

World building will come. There's a lot of plot that needs to happen, and if I slow down the book to focus on a day in the life of a crafter immediately, it may get boring for some. I will slowly introduce how the crafting system works over time. Remember, Blake doesn't know anything about crafting, so it's new to him too.

Timothy Nugent

On the flip side, it makes you almost invulnerable against heat for an hour. While Regeneration takes hours/days to heal, and Mental Blast is single target (two if you want your brain to bleed) The only reason the shield broke against the Manders is because they are higher level than he is, and specialize in Magic Power.

Malcolm Haynes

In my opinion, you need to do something to flesh out the crafters. Right now they literally feel like video game NPCs. They aren’t even allowed to increase their attributes beyond the initial 12 points, so what distinguishes them from each other. Like what’s the crafter version of Chi user vs Mana user? Not clear why anyone picks crafter except they’re scared to fight, but they effectively limit themselves to being second class citizens. Probably needs to take longer to craft stuff. Like building quality armor takes weeks or level 3 crafting hall takes months to years and requires hundreds of workers or level 1 constructors or something. Basically, need more world building to make sense of what a faction of thousands will be doing on a day to day basis.

Malcolm Haynes

Since you only get 1 spell/skill per level, flame shield seems awful specific. Seems like it should be a more generic elemental shield because as we see, it doesn’t stop electricity or wind. How many Heat based opponents can there really be? In contrast regeneration or mental blast are much more general purpose and make sense if you only get 1 skill per level.

Timothy Nugent

No, they don't need to. Blake believes that there is still plenty of time(4 months) to do everything necessary. Also, in the next few chapters, he goes on a recruiting mission of his own.

Sean

That makes sense. I guess my metric is how it performs against enemies one level higher than him right now so it's skewing my perception. To me it reads like a flimsy shield that can block one fire attack before it breaks.

Brandon Lydick

Do people *need* to live at the faction base at the moment? Obviously they will need to eventually but for six months they should be fine at home, and unless their crafters I don't think we've been given too much reason they need to be consistently present at the faction base.

Timothy Nugent

It is an incredibly powerful spell that basically makes you immune to heat. In order to balance that, it has a long cast time and cooldown time. If Flame Shield could be cast every fifteen minutes, lasted an hour, and placed on anyone, it would make all four group members always immune.

Timothy Nugent

I also didn't realize you guys haven't seen a spell evolve yet, so you don't know about some of the tradeoffs of evolving them, like longer cooldowns.

Sean

Tbh you could also change both to be 15 min cool downs since the spell is kind of trash if it has an hour cd when you use it on someone else. The whole idea of mana spells from what you've written is they have a lot of wind up and prep work. To me that feels like it's balanced around front loading the work. Tacking on a cool down feels like mana has no upsides.

Timothy Nugent

He will be expanding the faction, don't worry. He has to wait until it becomes livable, as having a hundred cars coming and going from the property is a great way to be exposed. It's getting there now, although no plumbing or lighting in the bunkhouse sucks.

Timothy Nugent

The almost an hour to cooldown is referring to an evolved Flame Shield Montgomery used. He was able to cast it on others, which increased its cooldown period. I should probably have said that.

Timothy Nugent

Oh, I see the issue. "However, once used, it could not be recast for fifteen minutes. "

Timothy Nugent

"at level one, it only lasted for an hour and took almost as long before it could be recast." Blake went into the Mander cave with it already active. Even though it was destroyed after the first group, he still had to wait for the cooldown to expire. I did not say how long he had to wait, but it wasn't five seconds. :D

Sean

Wasn't the cool down for flame shield an hour? I remember earlier there was a chapter saying they only ran the mander caves because there friend had the spell and they used it every other hour on the person who needed it most.

Brandon Lydick

It only costs 1 Mil to initiate people right? Honestly I don't think it would hurt for Blake to start putting aside points for creating some kind of police force, not everyone will be able to be in his faction it seems and maintaining order will be incredibly important later on. Finding some people he can trust to be at least mildly competent and non corrupt police/fighters could be invaluable, his mom could find the trustworthy ones while he sets aside maybe 1 Mil every run and it'd only barely eat into his power gain.
