“Talking”

“Um… so why am I here?” Tamari asked bluntly as she walked into what was referred to as the ‘S-Class Mission Briefing Room.’ It was essentially just a large room with a big screen hung on a wall and a bunch of computers.
“You’re going to be in my squad for an S-Class mission,” Gray replied dryly, to which Tamari looked at him blankly.
“...What?” Tamari asked blanky, glancing over at Renso who was standing in front of the huge screen, “You know I’m in Class-C, right? What the hell?”
That’s a fair reaction.
If Gray had just entered C-Class only a few months ago and was suddenly throwing into an S-Class mission he would’ve been pretty pissed too.
“I’m aware,” Renso didn’t elaborate.
“This is just how S-Class works,” Celia sighed, the green-haired woman standing next to Gray, “I’ll explain more later.”
Within the S-Class Mission Briefing Room was the trio of actual S-Class recruits - Gray, Caulifla, and Kale - along with the S-Class instructor, Renso. But that was where the actual ‘S-Class’ members ended. Celia was standing next to Gray, the woman with her usual blank expression, and both Asia and Tamari had just walked through the door into the room.
It turned out that Renso didn’t actually have a complete filled-out list with all the members that would be in Gray’s squad for the mission, as he had received a rather ominous ‘Don’t send the recruit Gray on a mission yet. King Vegeta will choose his team personally’ message the day Gray had been promoted to S-Class. As a result, the only people he was certain would be sent with him were Celia, Tamari, and Asia - as they had been with him during his F-Class mission, during which he had been able to choose his team.
For the moment they were the only three who were in the briefing room, but Gray was mostly certain that they wouldn’t be the only ones of his friends sent with him. Renso had explained that his squad would have between 10 to 20 members, meaning that there would be at least seven more that King Vegeta handpicked. Gray suspected that list would at least include Ochaco, Raphtalia, Saeko, and Asuna, though there would likely be more as well.
Maybe Ken’s ‘brothers?’
Caulifla and Kale didn’t count, as they were also S-Class recruits. They were only allowed to go on the mission with him because of the co-mission rule that was in place. It was actually working in Gray’s favor here, as he didn’t particularly care about the mission points, so he was fine just giving them to Caulifla or Kale. He was rather glad they were going with them, as they’d be given their own squads too, bringing the total count of Saiyans going on the mission anywhere from 30 to 60.
I have no reason to try and graduate S-Class anyway.
He had no intention of taking on more S-Class missions after this and wouldn’t have even taken on this one if he hadn’t been forced to. S-Class was the perfect place to be right now, as he was able to spend pretty much all day every day training. He could train against other strong recruits, of which so far he had only met Caulifla and Kale, to fulfill his body's desire for good fights without actually being in danger of dying. Graduating and becoming a squad leader would give him more chances for life-or-death battles, which his body certainly viewed as appealing, but this was the better option at the moment.
The other S-Class recruits were all on missions at the moment, though Gray wasn’t actually sure how many there were. When he had asked Caulifla, she had given him a very wise ‘I don’t know? A couple?’ Celia had given a more concrete answer of around ten.
“We’re going on an S-Class mission?” Asia said, slightly nervously, as she stepped up next to Gray. She glanced up at him, then blushed shyly and glanced down again, “I-If you’re with me, then I guess it’s okay…”
She really is too cute.
Gray never thought he’d use the phrase ‘soul healing,’ but that was the only way to describe the past few days being back with Asia. The cute girl really was an angel.
… she's healing my eyes too…
Beyond being cute, seeing the thick girls round and bubbly ass every day was a joy few got to experience.
“Alright, listen up,” Renso said loudly, drawing their eyes to him, “You’ll be leaving in two days, so there isn’t time for me to explain it twice. Listen carefully.”
If it’s two days, then there is literally time for him to explain it twice.
“I’ll remember it for you,” Celia supplied helpfully to his side, to which Gray nodded gratefully. It wasn’t that his memory was bad or anything, but Celia tended to remember even the tiniest of details to a tee.
“This is Galaxy #117,” Renso continued, tapping on the screen as the image of a large purple swirl floating in space appeared, “It’s not too far, as it's only a couple day trip from Planet Vegeta. Within this galaxy is a coalition of planets.”
He tapped on the screen again, and it zoomed into the swirl. It continued to zoom forward until it stopped on the image of seven planets lined up. Each one was a different color, which led Gray to believe they all had different climates and surfaces.
“This is the coalition, which call themselves the ‘Coalition of Monsters.’” Renso continued, pointing at the picture of the planets, “Lord Frieza considered them an annoyance to conquer, so he ignored them after selling the majority of the other planets within the galaxy. However, King Cold was recently in talks about forming an alliance with them.”
Gray narrowed his eyes.
An ‘alliance?’ If anyone in Frieza’s family is willing to form an alliance and not just conquer them, then they must be tough.
Granted, Gray was sure that said ‘alliance’ probably would’ve only lasted until King Cold didn’t need them anymore. Then he’d just conquer them himself.
“Lord Frieza sent multiple Frieza Force squadrons to conquer the coalition, but more than twenty failed to return alive,” Renso stated, “Numerous Saiyan Elite squads have failed as well.”
“W-Wait, they all failed, but you’re sending us?” Tamari asked incredulously, looking at Renso like he was an idiot, “We’re recruits! Why the hell are you sending us?!”
“What? Are you scared?” Caulifla spoke up, smirking slightly at Tamari, “Are you sure we gotta take her?”
“What did you say?” Tamari growled back, taking a step toward Caulfila as the two fiery girls stared each other down.
Caulifla had been staring with slightly annoyed eyes at Tamari ever since she entered the room, and it seemed the tension between the two women was mutual. Gray wasn’t sure why they instinctively didn’t like each other, but Celia had muttered something about the two women being ‘the same archetype, of course they’ll fight over you’ - whatever that meant.
“We’re being sent because of politics,” Celia interrupted the two women bluntly, bringing the room's attention to her, “Frieza could handle this himself, as he could just send one of his elite henchmen, but he’s doing it to mock us. There are only a handful Saiyans strong enough to take on this mission, but Father won’t send them - either because they’re dealing with something more important or for personal reasons. Father doesn’t want to go himself because doing so would be admitting to Frieza that our race is too weak to deal with even a small problem like this.”
A mission that wiped out twenty Frieza Force squads is a ‘small problem?’
Gray imagined that the ‘elite henchmen’ of Frieza’s in question was probably either the Ginyu Squad or someone like Zarbon or Dodoria. Overall, Gray didn’t think the mission was small.
“Father? Did you call the King your father?” Caulifla blinked, staring curiously at Celia.
“Unfortunately, yes,” She answered with a mutter, purposefully turning her back to Caulifla as the woman opened her mouth to ask more.
“I-I still don’t understand why we have to go…” Asia piped up, blushing slightly as all eyes turned to her, “I mean, there’s no other elite squads he can send? We’re the best option left?”
“We aren’t,” Celia replied bluntly, “Gray is. Father has high expectations of him. He expects Gray to become one of his personal elites after graduating.”
Yeah, well, he’s showing it pretty poorly.
If King Vegeta was expecting Gray to have any goodwill toward the king after he sent him on a literal suicide mission and then again on an S-Class mission, he was sorely mistaken. He knew that King Vegeta eventually wanted to rebel against Frieza, and that had been the reason he sent Celia to look for high-potential Saiyans - thus leading her to Gray - but Gray wasn’t exactly eager to team up with the man even if the looming threat was Frieza.
He’s a fuckin’ dick.
“Ahem,” Renso cleared his throat, “Can I continue with the briefing now? Remember that I’m only saying this once, alright?”
He’s kinda a dick too. He could totally explain this more than once.
All eyes turned back to Renso as he continued, “The coalition is made up of seven planets, but the situation seems to be more complicated than that. The first planet, called ‘Harro,’ has tense relations with the other ones. It’s filled with Saiyanoid creatures, and communication with them is possible.”
Gray stared at him blankly.
Did he just say ‘Saiyanoid’ instead of ‘humanoid?’
That probably wasn’t what he should be focusing on out of what Renso had said, but it was the first thought that came into his head. The next thought was about the planet itself.
It… kinda looks like Earth?
It wasn’t an exact match, but it was a green planet with a lot of blue. However, the land masses on the planet seemed to far exceed the water area.
“The next six are more united,” Renso pointed at the screen again, swiping it to the right and moving the first planet out of view, “They are inhabited by non-Saiyanoid creatures, and they don’t use power in the same way we do. They use what is referred to as ‘magic.’”
Oh, you gotta be fuckin’ with me.
Gray stared blandly at the line of planets. He had just finished dealing with a magic user that blocked his Ki on Yardrat, so he wasn’t exactly eager to dive headfirst into a planet full of them. He thought he’d be free from fighting magic wielders until he went to the Demon Realm.
“Each of the planets has a designated ruler,” Renso finished explaining, “The goal of the mission is to kill the seven kings. Whatever you must do to reach that goal is fine, but you are not allowed to destroy the planets entirely. They are to be sold afterward, so extermination of life is fine, but no damaging the actual planets.”
Great. A long-ass mission to take down not just one planet but seven?
“The overview files for what we know about each individual planet is still being finished, but I’ll ensure it’s sent to each of your rooms by the end of the day,” Renso said, and a small grin slowly formed on his face, “However, what I do know is that each planet has a moon…”
Oh.
Slowly, an excited grin formed on Gray’s face as a bead of excitement built up inside of him.
Maybe this won’t be so bad after all.
