Story by Nuntis:
Thorough as your preparations for the camping trip were, you had not accounted for being hunted by a predator two or three times your height.
And yet, you cannot help but stare disbelievingly as the shape of your friend slides down the gullet of a giant wolf. The early morning sun confidently highlights the grasping, desperate paw sticking out from between black lips and shiny teeth, before the beast’s chunky tongue wraps around it with terrifying ease and pulls the last of his treat in. An obnoxiously wet gulp is all that’s needed to turn the person with whom you’d been hiking a minute prior, to mere breakfast – a nameless, subtle weight settling between the gray-furred canine’s four legs. The beast, for his part, lowers his head without a care in the world, sighing contentedly.
Then he turns to you with a wicked, toothy grin. Slowly, teasingly, menacingly, his tongue wipes his lips clean. That had finally been enough to kick you into action, and you bolted. Somehow, you got away – or perhaps it was that the wolf decided not to pursue.
At least that gave you plenty of time to reflect on the short few moments that had led up to you wandering the woods alone. Was there anything you could have done to see your friend beside you, as opposed to a lump in a predator’s gut? Or had you been just a little too content to watch on in morbid fascination? These thoughts weighed you down as the sun wandered the sky. Noon gave way to the first hues of painted orange, and with it went your hope of finding your campsite again before nightfall.
Just when you took a brief moment to rest, finally convinced that your luck might have run dry, something viscous splashes on top of your head – right between your ears. Lukewarm, clear fluid seeps through your fur, followed by another glob.
You look up, and immediately wish you hadn’t. The imposing form of the wolf fills your view. Your eyes indecisively flicker between the soft, furry belly and the snout hovering above yours – hungry, greedy, smugly satisfied. The stomach remains still, unlike before – flatter. It growls loudly, as if chastising you for staring too long. Legs like tree trunks rise up on either of your sides, toes and claws digging firmly into the soil. Had you been any bigger, you would no doubt have been pinned underneath those heavy paws, lest you try and flee or fight. Helplessly diminutive as you are, there is no point in running, though – and you both know this.
So what is to stop the giant wolf from taking his sweet time?
His meaty, slick tongue drags across black lips, wiping away the slobber that had been dripping onto you. A moment later, those jaws part wide, revealing a glistening cave beyond. Hot, stale and rank air washes over your nose, before you muster enough courage to open your eyes fully.
Despite the looming peril, you cannot help but feel mesmerized. Your gaze dances from sharp fangs to gums, to the impatiently shifting, slimy tongue, to the ominously pulsing gullet in the back. Strands of sticky saliva hang from the predator’s teeth and tongue, threatening to leak – and then, without warning, the massive canine snaps his teeth shut, mere whiskers away from your snout.
A dark, heavy chuckle rumbles through the canine’s chest. As his nose dips in closer, that deceptively soft tongue pushes past his lips. It drags all the way across your form, from your waist to your ears, soaking you in a thin film of awful slobber. You cough and sputter as the wolf smacks his lips – teasing, tasting.
The toothy grin returns. Your fate is sealed.
“Hello, lunch.”
