Hiruzen can be summed up with one word "Indecision" he never can make up his mind which Action would be best until everything escalates and he is forced to decide what to do and his "friends" and his wife danzo make sure they play him like a fiddle in most cases

Well, the third let orochimaru go and it caused a world of problems; for everyone. Not only was his generation forced to deal with it, but the issue of orochimaru continued onward to naruto's as well. Maybe, that's one the reasons why asuma has something against his father? Because, in the end of the day hiruzen is a true blue and bold hypocrite. He totes this 'will of fire' speech but at least from the cannon it was more of 'do as I say' rather then 'do as I do' way of life. After all if he did follow what he says, he would seen the potential and turned naruto into the superb shinobi he was always meant to be. I also wonder what was going through his mind, when it came to the outside threats. Like he must of heard of akatsuki and what not, how can he justify not pushing the village in a state of readiness. At that point did he not care? Or was more of I'm sure I have more time, I'm not really sure a lot of things that happened in the cannon just showed a lack of care, interest or motivation to keep the village up to snuff. It's a military village after all, its not a civilian one.

It seems the ninja world delivers each ninja teacher in Konoha One student out of Three, who will betray all their teachings. For Hiruzen its Orochimaru, For Jiraya it's the orphans from Amegakure (Pein) for Minato it's Obito, and for Kakashi it's canon Sasuke. We the readers can see it coming a mile away, they can't beacuse of emotional attachment. Such a shame Hiruzen put his faith in the Snake Sannin, treating him like a son. He is undeserving. And did not thrust/take care of/teach Naruto as he promised the 4th, beacuse the young Uzumaki would return that care tenfold. (And to hell with the council. Hiruzen earned his hat in more than one ninja war.)

Yes. I agree that letting Orochimaru escape was a bad idea but in my opinion people hold Hiruzen to an absurdly high standard. From my perspective every man has a weakness that they would compromise their ideals for. For most it's family, for some it's money or power... Yes. Because Hiruzen is the Hokage, he is held to a higher standard but he is also human. And humans have moments of weakness... At least this is my view.

I always thought hiruzen was a failure of a hokage for letting orochimaru go, no other hokage would allow that to happen
