AssetRipper was originally a fork of uTinyRipper, which is part of why 3.4 was supported on older versions of AssetRipper.

3.4 support was intentionally removed for code maintainability. Older versions of AssetRipper supported. I am unsure when it was dropped. You can find out by reviewing release notes.
