I think some of it is his current environment as well. He lives a somewhat privileged child's life so far, with little consequences. Also, he still has a mix of his past selfish behavior combined with the inherent selfish tendencies of his new pre adolescent self. To top it off, at this point in the story I think he still feels a bit disconnected with this new world, like an imposter who doesn't belong, as if it were simply a very long dream.
