Chapter One: Cynthia vs Red
“Another challenger has been defeated!”
The bright stadium lights shined down on the biggest Pokémon battlefield in the region. Sinnoh’s Pokémon League stadium, where the finale of the annual circuit was taking place.
Two trainers stood on opposing podiums, one with a look of utter devastation and the other wearing the cool confidence she was known for. She smiled politely as her tall, imposing Garchomp stood before her without a scratch to be seen.
“That’s nearly ten victories in a row! And Cynthia’s Garchomp is looking no worse for wear! Can that fearsome Dragon-type do this all night long!?”
This year’s annual Pokémon League Championship was drawing on far longer than any other that came before it. On the final day, what was supposed to be the last grudge match between the two finalists had dragged on long into the evening. Now, the daylight had completely gone, leaving a dark night overhead, and only the bright stadium lights left to light up the field.
The two finalists had battled long ago, and the victor was decided... yet the crowd was still here, roaring and cheering as they watched battle after battle.
It was because of the Champion herself, Cynthia.
She was Sinnoh’s prize jewel. The region’s ultimate trainer, who was well-regarded for her incredible talent and skill, as well as her charisma and frequent public appearances. Not to mention her extraordinary beauty and fashion.
But the reason they were all still here so long after the final battle in the annual tournament was because Cynthia herself was facing challengers.
As the closing event to these annual championships, Cynthia would offer the victor of the year’s cup a chance to challenge her right then and there. Most took that incredible opportunity, even if all were defeated.
However, this year turned out a bit differently.
It started around the beginning of the year’s League circuit. Cynthia, as Champion, had been interviewed by a journalist. The topics strayed from Pokémon Battles altogether, heading down a direction she wasn’t really expecting.
“Relationship? Oh my.... Maybe someday~ But for the time being, I’m happily married to my work...”
“What would I look for in a man? Is that really an appropriate question for the Champion? Well, I suppose I have certain preferences... But for a man to truly catch my eye... They’d have to defeat me in a Pokémon battle...”
Looking back, Cynthia would view that interview as a rare lapse in judgment. Even she wasn’t prepared for what those simple sentences would spark in the hearts of aspiring young men across the region.
Her simple statement was taken as a call to arms. Suddenly, young men had a prize worth more than a gold trophy awaiting them at the Pokémon League. Cynthia’s heart!
The following circuit was one full of fierce competition. Gym Leaders had schedules so booked that trainers challenged each other for spots higher in the queue.
When the final competition came around, Cynthia was shocked by the turnout. The victor was a young man in his early twenties who seemed to be trying hard to get her attention. Unfortunately for him, he was left defeated in both aspects.
As a Champion of the people, Cynthia had a little tradition. To celebrate the closing of another year and bring attention to the Pokémon League, she would accept challengers from the crowd for the rest of the day. Usually, this only resulted in one big-headed or high-aspiring trainer getting thoroughly defeated by the Champion. Others would think twice and save themselves the embarrassment.
But this time... Cynthia had a line of a dozen men ready for the chance to challenge her.
“Unbelievable!” The announcer cried, still full of spirit, “Our Champion remains completely unfazed! Ten challengers later, and none have managed to take down even a single Pokémon!”
Cynthia smiled politely as the crowd roared their approval. Another young man left with a crushed expression and a defeated Pokémon Team.
Her calm, collected beauty left the crowd mesmerized. Even after an unprecedented string of challengers, the people were in awe at just how confident the Champion was under the stadium's bright lights.

Cynthia’s POV
‘...another one, hm?’ Cynthia thought to herself as she watched her opponent leave the field in shame. She eyed his retreating figure with an unreadable expression on her face, ‘...Unfortunately, he wasn’t really my type anyway...’
Cynthia was mildly annoyed by all of this. Although, she’d never let it show on her face. What was supposed to be a flippant response to blow off an interviewer’s pressing interest in her non-existent love life had turned into a regional event to ‘win her heart’.
Cynthia had given that response as a way to dismiss the interviewer’s invasive question, but in some parts of her mind, she meant it. Her life revolved around Pokémon, so she couldn’t see herself with a ‘partner’ who wasn’t a trainer as well.
‘But I suppose there’s still no one worth considering...’
“Oh? Was that the last one?”
The announcer’s voice brought her attention back to the stadium. The crowd was silent, waiting for the next bold trainer to stand up and challenge her... but this time it seemed like the battles were over.
‘Finally...’ Cynthia let out a small breath of relief, ‘I was concerned this really would be going on all night...’
She never intended to make such a spectacle. Primarily centered around herself. The point of these ‘challenges’ was to encourage trainers to aim high and challenge the League... It was not some shallow excuse for her to be in the spotlight. For that reason, she was glad it was over.
“Wait!”
Until the announcer cried out again, with excited energy in his tone.
“Who is that..? Someone is coming out of the challenger’s tunnel!”
Cynthia turned her eye to the tunnel across the field. The entryway for the official challengers of the tournament. A place that no one should be, now that the tournament was over... yet she saw a young man walking out from the tunnel and approaching the challenger’s podium.
“...It looks like there’s another one!”
Her lone, exposed eye slightly narrowed as she analyzed the newcomer. He was dressed in simple red and white trainer gear. A red jacket, simple jeans, and raven-black hair under a Pokémon League cap. At a glance, he looked utterly ordinary. An everyday trainer, you’d see in the popular style around Pokémon Centers…
But something about him made her just the slightest bit curious. He confidently rose up the steps to the podium without stopping to gawk at the vast crowd in the stadium seats. As he reached the top, he said nothing and merely matched her gaze from across the field.
She got a strange sense of silent confidence coming from this newcomer, and she reached forward to press a button on the panel in front of her. An intercom that connected their podiums.
“What is your name?” She asked politely.
“...” No response.
Cynthia merely acknowledged it with a slight nod, ‘...the silent type? Is he merely shy or..?’
“...Red.” A calm, quiet voice came through the speaker.
“..!” Cynthia turned her gaze up to meet his again. Red. That name struck a cord in the back of her mind.
“Red..? From Pallet Town?” She inquired.
“...” Again, no response. But this time, she saw the slightest dip of his cap as he nodded once.
Suddenly, her back straightened up. She looked at him with a far more critical eye and wondered, ‘Could it really be..?’ The name ‘Red’ was known to her, even from the far south region of Kanto. It was a name that had once been legendary but had quickly dwindled down into something of an urban myth as ‘Red’ disappeared from the public eye.
For the first time that day, Cynthia felt a bit of excitement for the oncoming battle.
“Well, Red.” She said politely, “I assume you’re here to battle?”
Her silent opponent brushed the side of his jacket away and reached down to his belt. She expected to see him draw out a Pokéball... but instead, he held something out to her.
It was a Max Potion.
‘..!’ Cynthia silently stared at his extended arm and silent gaze. A small smile grew on her lips as she thought, ‘This young man is quite audacious..!’
She was the Champion of the region, here standing in her own stadium, after sweeping ten teams of Pokémon in a row... and this challenger stared at her with one obvious intent. ‘Heal First’.
She let out a small laugh of amusement, “Don’t worry. As you can tell, my Garchomp hasn’t sustained any significant damage or fatigue. It won’t affect the result of our battle, I assure you.”
But Red didn’t back down. Even across the field, she could feel an intense gaze on an expressionless face.
“Very well.” She complied, and the battle was momentarily paused for Nurse Joy and Chansey to administer treatment to Garchomp right there in the middle of the stadium.
Cynthia crossed her arms as she stared down the dark-haired challenger. While the two stared each other down, the crowd started rousing into excitement for the oncoming battle.
Then, when Nurse Joy cleared the field, Red finally moved. He pulled a red and white sphere from his belt. Before the ref and announcer were even ready to begin, he tossed it out onto the opposing side of the field.
With a loud, intimidating roar, a dragon-like Pokemon was unleashed to rival Garchomp in size and fearsomeness. Its orange wings and fiery breath were familiar to Cynthia, though rare in her own home region.
As a master herself, she could tell with just a glance. The sheen of the Charizard’s scales, the heat radiating from the roaring fire on its tail... This was a different beast than all the other Pokémon she’d faced today.
For the first time, she grew a slight smile of excitement, ‘This may be interesting...’ Her curiosity for the lurking legend known as ‘Red’ grew. She was eager for the battle to begin.
Finally, the ref was on the field and signaled the start of the match.
Her Garchomp’s predatory eyes were leveled against an equally fierce Charizard as the two monstrous creatures stared each other down.
Then Cynthia heard a voice carry over the field, “...Fire Blast...”
In just the first few moments of the battle, the field was engulfed in a raging inferno. Red opened up the fight with a display that he was nothing like the other trainers that came before him.
Cynthia’s eyes widened slightly as a gust of heat blew across her long, platinum-blonde hair. Her back slightly straightened as she leaned forward and gave her own command, “Dragon Breath!”
Garchomp fired back just in time as a gout of indigo dragon fire blasted against the raging inferno.
‘Hmm… Alright…’ Cynthia realized she was about to face the first REAL challenger she’d had in quite some time. As the battle began in earnest, she found herself falling into a familiar state of intense focus.
While, in the back of her mind, she recalled what little she’d heard of the mysterious trainer ‘Red’. The man who, before he’d even challenged the Kanto League for the first time… discovered the hidden headquarters of the dangerous, infamous criminal organization ‘Team Rocket’, ventured in alone, and completely destroyed it from the inside.
‘Red, hm..?’ Cynthia crossed her arms with a keen, focused gaze. Her lips curled into an approving smile as she stared across the field, ‘Let’s see if you're worth my time…’
“Draco Meteor.” She replied calmly, and Garchomp fired back with stadium-shaking power. These two simple displays destroyed any notion of the spectator’s idea that this would be just another one-sided slaughter. After nearly a dozen disappointing trainers, a real challenger had appeared.
Under the roaring of the stadium’s crowd, the most intense battle in Sinnoh’s history commenced. Despite the late hour, no one in the crowd would dream of missing this final match—the clash of two legendary trainers under the bright spotlights of the League’s biggest stadium.
Charizard and Garchomp, two ferocious monsters, were locked in a roaring, violent grudge match.
…And after them, five more impossibly strong pairs of Pokemon would follow after.
…Until eventually, when all the smoke and dust were cleared, a victor was decided.
The battle was over.
Cynthia wore a slight smile despite the results. She held a hand gently to her chest, feeling the way her heart was thumping loudly. The adrenaline that came with a hard-fought battle. It’d been so long since she’d felt this excitement.
The crowd was speechless for the first time that night. On the field, they all stared as a graceful, beautiful Roserade finally gave one final twirl as it fainted after a long-fought battle.
Across the field, a small yellow mouse sparked its cheeks with surprising ferocity, staying alert until the match was called.
“...It’s my loss.” Cynthia finally said as she raised her Pokéball. The metal orb’s beam of red light swallowed up her fainted Roserade. It signaled the result of the match.
The crowd erupted in cheers as the Champion admitted defeat.
“Unbelievable!” The announcer shouted, bolstering the crowd with his excitement.
But Cynthia heard none of it. Instead, she focused all her attention on the man across the field from her. She watched that little yellow mouse respond to a near-silent call. A Pikachu with such power that it left her speechless. It obediently darted across the field and leaped up to the podium before climbing up Red’s arm.
Cynthia watched his next move. Instead of recalling the creature himself, Red held out a Pokéball to the mouse on his shoulder. The Pikachu chirped at him one last time, then leaned forward to press its nose against the button before it was sucked into the ball to rest.
‘Who are you..?’ Cynthia wondered as she stared at him with a lingering gaze. Then she had to wonder, ‘Is he... younger than me? But his mastery of Pokémon is so...’
“A word from the victor! Please, tell us your name!”
Cynthia looked up to see Red’s emotionless gaze turn toward the announcer’s box... then he promptly looked away. He met Cynthia’s gaze one final time. Then she saw him reach forward. His finger pressed against the button of the intercom on the console.
He reached up and tipped his hat slightly, “...Good match.”
It was such a simple statement. Cynthia felt a strange feeling in her chest. Like she was a young trainer again, meeting a passing opponent on the road and exchanging pleasantries after a brief battle...
Red didn’t wait for a reply as he turned his head away and silently left the stadium.
As he left, Cynthia’s eye lingered on his back. This time, she hummed in thought and raised a finger to her chin, ‘Red, hm..? He was rather handsome, wasn’t he..?’ As that thought occurred in her mind, she wondered if this quickened heartbeat was truly the lingering excitement from a heated Pokémon battle... or something more.
Even as he disappeared and Cynthia was left to face interviews, her mind was still spinning, circling around the mysterious trainer who’d just defeated her.
One thing was abundantly clear. No man had ever left such a lasting impression the Champion.

Later that night, the legendary battle between two of the greatest trainers in the world was still vivid in the minds of all who had experienced it.
...Except for Cynthia herself. Her first defeat in nearly a decade wasn’t the focus of her thoughts. Instead, her mind was wholly fixated on the man who had done it. With such intense red eyes, the dark-haired challenger had torn down her team in front of the entire stadium.
She realized something about him during the battle. He was calm and calculating. He used clever strategy to maximize the overwhelming power of well-trained Pokémon, dominating the field. It was something she was quick to recognize... because it was her own style of combat.
They were two of the same kind.
‘Hmm...’ That thought made him linger in her mind as her curiosity grew. Late into the evening, the Champion reclined on a couch with an open bottle of wine. In her hand was a state-of-the-art tablet, feeding her information on the trainer known as Red.
As she dug up his buried, impressive history, she grew more and more fascinated. At the same time, there was a lingering thought in the back of her mind. Why had such a lurking legend suddenly appeared today to challenge her?
Cynthia couldn’t get him out of her mind. The mysterious man who’d bested her on her own home field. He seemed like the man who valued his own privacy, yet he’d walked onto the field of one of the biggest stadiums in the world and challenged her in front of the crowd.
Was he merely there for a Pokémon Battle? Of course not.
Cynthia felt her heart tingle as she remembered his intense red eyes and serious demeanor. The way he was calm and calculating, bringing his best Pokémon and strategies to the field to give her the fight of a lifetime... and the strange feeling in her chest as she was defeated.
‘He did all of that to get my attention...’ She mused to herself, staring into her glass of red wine. A small smile curled on her lips, ‘Perhaps he’s earned it then...’
For the first time, Cynthia considered a man.
‘He was calm and in control… not loud and brash like the other guys who wanted my attention…’ She let her thoughts linger on him, ‘He was handsome and stoic... intelligent, if his battle strategies were anything to go by... and he had such loyal Pokémon... so he must have a good heart too...’
With slightly rosy cheeks, the Champion of Sinnoh smiled down at the vibrant red eyes of the trainer profile on her screen, ‘We might just be the perfect match💕’

Deeper into the night, Cynthia returned to the lavish penthouse suite the League provided for her as Champion. She stood in front of a full-length mirror, looking at the reflection of herself as she unbuttoned her iconic black coat.

“..?” His red eyes looked into hers with a silent question, sensing something deeper from her innocent statement.
Her lips curled into a gentle smile as she leaned over on the couch, slightly emphasizing the glimpse of her tantalizing cleavage, “I’ve just been thinking... of everything the two of us could accomplish together...”
