Abigail Rotten [Formerly Abigail Sweeny] was very clever, indeed.
She married Thomas Rotten when he was only 20 years old. They were both from prospecting families so it made sense that they would get married. It made sense that they would go into oil - the new prospecting. Thomas was the prodigal son, so it made sense that he would be the face of the company and the person everyone saw as the boss. Thomas wasn’t a great business man, however, so it made sense that Abigail did most of the work. Thomas also drank a lot [which made sense since he was such a bad business man], so it really makes sense that he fell one night at the site. It made sense that Abigail never remarried, since she must have been crushed to lose her husband.
When her success became too big to ignore, Men asked her how this could come to be - and she said it was all her husband and his wise teachings before his untimely passing. This made sense to the Men and so they left it alone, although they still felt uneasy about it.
Abigail mostly hired tough men. Thugs. Brash, angry men who had bad habits. They all had families, though. You see, Abigail ran dangerous jobs. Only searching for oil deep, deep down in the earth. And she offered insurance. Incredible insurance. She would have to meet with the spouse, of course, but after Abigail and the wife talked the insurance was good to go! It made sense that so many of those men died - they knew the risk. Those jobs were incredibly dangerous. But so many of those strong willed men wouldn't take 'no' for an answer. It’s a good thing their families were looked after.
Down in the earth they would be drilling and drilling away. Destroying. Breaking everything in their path.
“There’s nothing here, Miss!” they would shout.
“Deeper” she would cry out as though. her voice was amplified by a cave that only existed for her
“How about now? That better, you crazy hag?” the breathless whimper would say under breath.
“DEEPER!” she shouted, as if she somehow heard them.
And down they went. So far down. Down into the earth. Deeper and deeper and deeper
Everyone loved Abigail. It makes sense that she was a hero. She gave so much back to the families.

Abigail sounds like a badass. A great end to a year of amazing prompts 💜 I was hesitant to participate and only did so with a few (it’s been a long time since I exercised my creative writing skills. Renaming works of art was a favorite - so many of us chose Judith and Holofernes lol) but they have been so fun to read and interact with. Looking forward to the next year of prompts (if there’s going to be more) and being more active!

“Deeper” she cried out. “How about now? That better?” the breathless whimper said. “DEEPER!” she shouted. “I’m trying,” came out in a pant, “I don’t want to hurt you.” “Damnit Earl, quit pokin’ around and really get your elbow in there” she growled, “that knot ain’t gonna fix itself.” Dang y’all I can’t believe it’s been a year. Prior to starting these I hadn’t done creative writing since assignments in middle school. Thankfully, it started with some silly easy prompts and I thought hey why not. You wonderful folks have been the best cheerleaders and so supportive. Thank you doc for helping me unlock some creativity and an outlet to express myself. You other talented beauties push me to grow and it’s a privilege to experience your words.
