“You’re asking her out tonight, riiiight Marie?”
“I probably will…”
Juvia sighed. “Girl, you need confidence. I know Laura is into you too, I’ve seen how she looks at you! She pretty much confessed to you last week at the pub!” The exasperated woman said, crossing her legs and glaring at her roommate.
“Sh-she was drunk! She could have said anything…” Marie bit her lip and twirled a strand of her relatively short, black hair in her fingers. She couldn’t help but begin to pace back and forth in their apartment’s living room.
“...Seriously? Getting drunk just lowers your inhibitions, it doesn’t make you do random stuff for no reason.” She shook her head. “I wish I could make you follow your heart already!”
At that moment, a pair of wooden marionette control bars popped into existence above Marie’s head. They simply floated over the stunned woman for a few seconds before a series of ethereal strings shot out from them! In the blink of an eye, the ghostly strings pierced Marie’s body, attaching themselves to her arms, legs, head, and back!
“Wh-what!?” Marie stammered breathlessly.
“Don’t look at me! I’m not doing this!” Juvia spat as she got to her feet. “Just stay calm, ok?”
“I-I can’t move! I’m trying to run! Juvia, why can’t I move!?”
Leaping into action, the unbound woman began tugging on the puppet’s strings. At that, both of Marie’s legs jolted upward, leaving her whole body floating in mid-air!
“JUVIAAAAHHHH!!” Marie shrieked.
The doll’s roommate let go of the strings, causing Marie’s legs to fall back down again. She quickly rummaged through the kitchen to find some scissors, then returned and frantically snipped as many strings as she could.
…But nothing happened. The strings weren’t made of solid matter, so the scissors may as well have just snipped thin air.
“Ughhh, what do I do!?”
‘Juvia, help me!!’ Marie said without moving her mouth. ‘I feel so stiff… Nnng…’
“I’m trying, I-! I… Why do you sound so strange?”
‘What? What do you mean!?’
Turning her attention away from the strings and control bars, Juvia finally noticed her friend’s face. She could do nothing but stand, frozen in horror, with mouth agape and eyes wide.
‘Wh-what is it!? Why are you looking at me like that!? Juvia, say something!’ Marie demanded frantically.
Juvia was staring at a painstakingly carved and painted wooden face! Her gorgeous green eyes were now naught but glossy paint on eye-shaped indents sculpted into wood, which Juvia found uncanny in particular. Locked in a permanently neutral expression, Marie’s new face wouldn’t budge even when she spoke.
‘Tell me, please! What’s happening to me!?’ Marie quivered in an etheric, almost echoey voice.
“Y-you’re becoming a p-puppet!!” Juvia gasped, shakily pointing at her roommate.
Then, Juvia noticed the inanimate wooden corruption spreading out from Marie’s face and across her skin. Soon enough, her whole head was naught but wood, paint, and synthetic hair! But it didn’t stop there: woody creaks filled the air as the transformation continued down her neck, over her shoulders, and into her arms and torso. The wooden petrification was briefly hidden under Marie’s tight red crop top, but soon reemerged to solidify her once-soft tummy.
‘Don’t just stand there!! Do something, please!!’ Marie sounded on the brink of tears despite having lost the ability to cry.
However, a new thought crossed Juvia’s mind: “This is a wish come true… Once this is done, I can control you so that you make your move on Laura!” A devilish grin formed on her face.
‘Wh-what!? Who cares about that right now!! B-besides, I can’t let her see me like this!!’
“Listen Marie, when you and Laura are finally girlfriends, my wish will be complete and you’ll turn back!” Juvia then lowered her voice to barely audible levels. “Probably…”
‘B-b-but Laura can’t see me like this!! What would she think of me!?’
As more and more of her humanity was pushed out by the transformation, Marie’s body began to separate at her shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles, and neck into component parts, only to be reconnected by subtle metallic coupler joints!
“Don’t worry Marie, I’ll be a good puppet master and make sure you end up in Laura’s arms - or between her legs~”
Almost as if in response to Juvia’s comment, the doll’s face gained a less-than-subtle blush painted onto it from thin air. Within moments, her whole body had been converted to wood - she, now it, was a complete marionette! With the process complete, the ethereal strings tied to Marie vanished from sight and its control bars floated down into Juvia’s hands.
‘P-puppet… m-master!?’
“Hmm, you’re right, that just doesn’t fit… How about puppet mistress?~ Or you could just call me Mistress~” Juvia smirked playfully at the former human.
With one little wrist motion, Juvia made her new toy lift its left arm. A second flick of the wrist made Marie lift its right arm. Before long, the Puppet Mistress had magically absorbed a mastery of puppeting skills from the control bars and was expertly controlling the helpless wooden woman.
“Hee hee hee, I can sense your thoughts and feelings, Marie~ You can’t hide how excited you are right now~”
It was true. Marie was somehow aroused by its inanimate - but not lifeless - predicament. It retained all of its senses despite being solid wood, allowing her to feel her puppeteer’s each and every whim.
‘B-but… Nnng…’
“Hee hee! ‘I’m Marie Onette! Where is my dear Laura when I need her to sweep me off my feet?~’” When Juvia imitated her roommate, the words were magically spoken aloud through the doll’s body in Marie’s voice!
‘Hey! Y-you can’t just steal my voice!!’ Marie objected distraughtly. ‘It’s bad enough that you’re moving my b-body!!’
“Such a silly dolly~” Juvia hissed condescendingly. “Your Puppet Mistress is your voice~” She maneuvered her marionette within arm’s reach, set down a control bar, and cupped Marie’s smooth, hard cheek in her hand. “Now, how about we get you all dressed up for your big date, hmm?~”

The ringing doorbell made Marie’s lil wooden heart flutter. ‘A-are we really doing this!?’
‘Of course we are, puppet~’ Juvia responded telepathically. It only took a short while to discover that she could not only control and communicate with her doll, but also perceive with its senses too. As such, the sly roommate was able to accurately pull the strings from the secrecy of her bedroom.
The marionette ‘borrowed’ - i.e. was made to wear - a short, sparkly, sleeveless, midnight-blue dress, matching opera gloves, and simple black tights from Juvia’s wardrobe; neither clothes nor anything else could obstruct the incorporeal strings pulling on the little puppet’s body.
With fluid motions, Marie’s body opened the door and came face to face with her crush.
“Hey Marie!”
“Hello, darling~” Marie said sultrily.
“M-Marie, you look stunning!” The woman’s cheeks were flushed and her eyes were practically sparkling. “I feel kind of under-dressed by comparison…” Laura was wearing jeans that tightly hugged her legs and a taut grey sweater over her chubby figure. Her long brown hair glowed in the warm light around her.
‘D-does she not see that I’m a puppet!?’ Marie whispered in her mind.
‘Let’s find out~’ Juvia replied.
“Like what you see, hmm?~” Marie cooed as her crush walked in. “Not too cold and lifeless for you? You know, since I am a doll after all…”
“Oh Marie, we’ve talked about this… You know I don’t see you as any less for being a doll. I like you for who you are.”
‘She… doesn’t see this as odd? And wait, we haven’t talked about this! I’m not a d-doll!! …Right?’
‘Shush, puppet~ Mistress is busy setting you up with your love interest~’
“And I’ve always loved you for that, Laura. You’re so sweet… I wish I could spend all my time with you…” Marie sighed coyly, sitting on the sofa and crossing her legs melodramatically.
“You l-love me!? You want to… r-really?” Laura quivered in anticipation.
‘J-Juvia! Y-you’re going too fast!! What if she’s getting overwhelmed!? I’m getting overwhelmed! You’re pulling on my heartstrings, Mistress…’
‘Huh? What did you just say?’ Juvia asked, having been momentarily snapped out of her domineering fun.
‘I said you’re pulling on my heartstrings, Juvia! I don’t think I can take this…’
Shaking off her marionette’s comment, Juvia returned to playing the role of Marie. “Of course I love you, Laura! I’ve always loved you… I just couldn’t bear to ruin the friendship we have.” The back of Marie’s hand was placed on its forehead. “Forgive me…”
‘Ohhh… P-please Laura, please… Oh Laura, I want you to hold my hand… to kiss me… to love me and Mistress… And M-Mistress?’ Marie’s mind was beginning to catch up with its body’s transformation now. Little doll thoughts kept popping up in its little wooden head, and its humanly thoughts could no longer outpace them. It was becoming a true marionette now! ‘Nnng… Wh-what am I… th-thinking… hee hee!~ D-dolly wants Laura… Dolly wants… M-mistress…? Hee hee hee!~’
‘Marie? Marie!? What are you saying!?’
“Oh Marie, I… I-!! I love you too!” Laura sat right beside the inanimate being and took its hands in her own. “Would you l-like to go out? W-with me?”
‘Oh my gosh!! M-Mistress, she’s asking us out!! I’m so happy!!’
‘Oh god, it’s changing your mind… D-don’t worry, once I agree, the wish should be complete and you can go back to normal, hopefully… Oh, I wish you become normal once I agree…’
“Oh Laura, yes! Of course! I love you so much!” Marie said excitedly, but with a hint of panic hidden under the surface.
Unable to contain herself, Laura leaned in and placed her soft, plump lips on Marie’s cold, hard, wooden ones.
‘Ok… this should wear off any moment now, right?’ Juvia wondered. ‘Marie, how are you feeling?’
‘Oh Mistress!! Laura’s kissing us!! It loves us so much!! Hee hee hee!’
‘“It”!?’
Juvia’s jaw dropped when Laura withdrew from the kiss and she was able to see another still, wooden face on Laura’s body! Much like Marie’s, Laura’s face was frozen in a neural expression, and…
“Oh god, what the fuck!? She has your face!!” Juvia spat aloud.
‘Hee hee, what are you talking about Mistress?’ Marie asked telepathically.
‘I’ve always had this face, right Mistress?’ Now, Juvia could hear Laura’s voice in her mind too!
“It’s spreading… Oh god, it’s spreading!!” Juvia dropped Marie’s control bars and rushed out of her bedroom and into the living room so she could see the situation for herself: much to her horror, there was another pair of control bars hoving above Laura’s head which were tethered to her by another set of ethereal strings. “Oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck…”
The soon-to-be former human’s body was rapidly petrifying into wooden doll components! Her chestnut hair was already an artificial wig glued to her seemingly lifeless wooden head, and her neck had already become a joint just like Marie’s!
Juvia went to grab the changing woman, but was stunned to find Marie’s control bars in her hands! Frantically shaking her arms, she couldn’t let go no matter how hard she tried! “What the fuck!?”
At that moment, both Marie’s and Laura’s dolly heads turned to face Juvia, and she could see their painted-on eyes were somehow glowing with a faint lilac hue. ‘You love us, right Mistress?’ The two marionettes asked in unison, their two different voices harmonising beautifully yet eerily. ‘We love our Puppet Mistress! Hee hee!’
Once Laura’s transformation completed and she was a chubby wooden dolly, the ethereal strings vanished from sight and her control bars floated over to the terrified human. Juvia could do nothing but watch as Laura’s control bars merged into Marie’s, giving her control over both life-sized puppets before her.
Scared senseless, Juvia somehow managed to open the door to their apartment despite the control bars stuck to her hands and ran downstairs screaming bloody murder. “HELP! SOMEONE HELP ME, PLEASE!”
On the ground floor, Marie and Juvia’s neighbour Celine was just heading out the main doors. Her long, curly blonde hair complimented her purple jacket and tight black leggings.
“C-Celine, please! You have to help me!”
However, when Celine turned to face her, it was Marie’s emotionless doll face staring back at her! A sound from behind made Juvia spin and see another two wooden dollies holding hands.
The last thought that crossed her mind before fainting was that she should have been more careful what she wished for…
