I found this content relevant, and I would have enjoyed it in the main video, but I also see and agree with your points on why it was deleted for a wider audience. Something that might be compelling (though I have no idea how to execute) is the Gene Wolfe style narrative where multiple readings/watchings reveal substantially more information about the subject.

Cutting relatively valid content for time to punch up your core message always feels a little like drowning puppies. But unlike the metaphor, it can actually be a good idea! Think it was a decent call here.

A good call as far as making it a more watchable video, but you also saved yourself from getting bombarded in the comments... it turns out the North Pole is a terrible place to try to view the northern lights, on par with Oregon in fact. The Auroral Oval is closely aligned to the Arctic Circle(-ish) which means the displays are usually over the horizon from the pole(s) unless a solar storm is underway. [disclaimer: I haven't actually been to the poles. If my science is wrong feel free to correct me]

I think you made the right call even if many people would have found it interesting. If you don't already know the hand rules it's probably extraneous to a video ostensibly about runways. That said as someone working within the industry, conventional current makes more sense, damn you old timey scientists who damned us forever! I work in a giant 1500 MW power plant and I'm always amazed at how stupidly complex electricity and magnetism are. Simplifying it to the level of the average person and making it entertaining is one hell of a job.

As a science (physics) writer myself I concur. Good decision. That middle section is definitely the slowest even after the cut. Though I love your videos so much I'd personally always take a super long cut and enjoy every minute, for the general audience it's a clear decision. The video doesn't lose much from removing it since it isn't important to the core topic.

Good decision - it would have been one tangent too many (I'm not sure how you got away with as many tangents as you did and still have a video that hangs together!). The only problem is the remaining reference near the end to lots of things being backwards. That sounded odd to me when I first watched the video since there weren't really that many backwards things. Now I understand why it was there - there used to be one more backwards thing.

Is this something that historically would have found like as a footnote on the channel? Like, leave in the pretty animation at the north pole and mention the Aurora by name, then go down the rabbit hole in a super quick and dirty footnote video?

I agree the cut is needed. It's a great tie in for a classroom setting since I'm sure there would have been questions about the aurora before but as is it it's just left dangling.
