I would just like to point out that *diagetically*, Mr. Birchum's conservatism is the root cause of his unhappiness. If he weren't a conservative idiot, as a skilled tradesman, he could have joined a union! He would have made way more money than he ever could as a teacher, not had to deal with kids, *and* obtained the health insurance coverage he needed.
