This was one of the most unfortunate situations Allister could have found himself in, and he hated that it was becoming a regular occurrence. This left the Beta Advisor of Phobos and the Omega Leader of Deimos to be sitting alone in Central Hub— or more correctly known as Allister’s Study. Borrowed computer equipment from Clifford’s inventory had been set up to maintain monitoring for the team, keeping track of their whereabouts, as well as keeping live feed on police scanners and local news. The two larger wolves wore body cameras, and every member had a wiretap on them. Between a werewolf’s natural abilities as a hunter, coupled with Rody and Allister quick wits and strategy, these operations would perform flawlessly.
This collaboration was established to fulfill two primary objectives. Firstly, using the humans’ world as neutral ground, the two packs would treat this as a bonding exercise. In antiquity, Phobos and Deimos were sibling packs, separate but united. Centuries of feuding eventually lead to the downfall of Deimos, making Phobos the main pack for a few generations. That changed with Rody rocking the foundation that has been relaid. Only a handful of years had passed since his ascension to power, and tension between the two packs had not eased since. This was meant to help ease that.
Secondly, Cliff required more hands regarding an investigation he’d been following for some time. Not everyone was privy to that information, aside from the two pack leaders and their betas. Whoever and whatever they encountered would remain classified information until Cliff gave the all clear. It was all good in theory, but one facet of this alliance was chafing. Allister couldn’t stand being around Rody. His voice was distracting, his scent was noxious, and all Allister could do was pretend he wasn’t bothered by his presence. Rody, on the other hand, seemed entirely unfazed. He came into Allister’s study as he had done since the beginning of these exercises, all calm and collected, annoyingly so. They settled into their routine of set up, work, listen, and guide. Instinctually, Jay and Cliff were excellent and in their element. Strategically, the team could not have been in better hands than with Allister and Rody.
A blip came up on the displayed map, and the beta wolf adjusted his headset. “It seems an officer has been dispatched a block from your first destination,” he said into the microphone. He watched the screen, seeing Jay and Clifford and their small entourage take pause at his words. “Proceed with caution.”
“Smoke.” Clifford’s murmur crackled into their ears.
Off to his side, the omega leader grumbled at his own desk. He touched his headset, speaking clearer. “There’s a reported fire at the location we intended to investigate later this evening.” The gray haired man pulled up all available information they had on the supposedly closed down distillery. He started updating the previous report, as the police dispatcher rattled off details.
“We’re moving in,” Jay said, before the party rushed to the seemingly abandoned building. Hissing and snapping, snarls and outcries of pain were all that could be heard in their ears. There was a low quality view of what was going on displayed on their screens, supplied by the body cameras that the two leads of the raid wore. Allister remained tense and focused, only to damn near jump out of his skin when a hand rested on his shoulder.
“What the bloody hell is wrong with you?” Rationally, he was glad that none of the ground forces could hear his outburst, due to the push-to-talk function of their headset, but he wished someone had. If only to know that Rody was incredibly unprofessional in such an important time. “Why would you bother me at a time like this?”
“You’re tense.” Rody’s presence was annoyingly pacifying. His scent was irritatingly potent. There were several reasons why Allister stayed away from him, besides these.
Just before Allister could retort, Jay came back onto the operation’s line. “All clear.”
“We’ll have to meet with SuNat to document our findings,” Clifford said, very much stuck in his work mindset. He sounded absolutely enthralled to have to meet with the Supernatural Police Division (annoyingly called “SuNat” by human cops). “It may take an hour or two, then our travel time home.”
Allister swatted away the omega’s hand, and touched his headset. “Enjoy your paper pushing. Were there any injuries?”
The omega didn’t know when to take a hint. Those calloused hands rested on his shoulders again, attempting to get him to relax. Rody worked out some knots he knew he had, but refused to do anything about over the last few weeks. Between the fact that his favorite spa was closed until the masseuse recovered, and all the planning he’s been doing with the omega, when would he have had the time?
How could I relax like this? Allister withheld a snarl, while listening to Jay give a brief report of their entourage. With all well and good, he curtly signed off and removed his headset.
With one hand on his headset and the other still resting on the white wolf’s shoulder, the Deimos leader gave his gratitude to the team. He looked away from Allister, and wished everyone a safe trip home. Just as his hand left the headset, Allister stood from his chair and crowded the omega against the adjacent desk. Those warm eyes were wide, though unafraid. “One would think you would show a little respect for someone's personal space,” the taller man snapped. He tore the device off the other’s head and tossed it into the empty office chair. “But you, Rody, probably think so highly of yourself, that you could get away with anything.”
“You’ve been clearly stressed out. I was just worried about you, Allister.” That’s more like it, the white wolf thought. When those warm eyes carried a spark of anger, a flicker of defiance, that’s what he most enjoyed seeing in the smaller wolf. He could hear the strain to remain polite in his voice, as he asked, “would you prefer me to be callous like you?”
Allister’s nose crinkled in annoyance. “It suits you better than this pathetic charade you use to pacify everyone.” Seeing the omega genuinely hurt was satisfying. Seeing some sort of emotion besides his ever present smile and his obnoxious go-getter attitude was worth poking at the beast. Allister knew there was a monster beneath all the niceties.
He was eager to break it.
“I have a vague idea of how much you loathe me, but we aren’t enemies. Why do you still insist on treating me like this?” Rody raised a hand to try and push him off, only for Allister to catch his wrist. “Let me go.” His voice dropped an octave and any sense of polite pleasantries. What a nice growl he had.
A cruel smile played across the beta’s lips. “You wanted your hands all over me earlier, but it’s unwelcomed now that I’m the one instigating?” Allister tsked at the omega, holding the wrist tighter. He stepped closer into the smaller man’s space. “Make your intentions clear. Stop hiding behind the guise of being nice.”
Something snapped within Rody. His patience? His resolve? The omega could worry about his castaway dignity later. He didn’t care that he bared his fangs, nor did he care that he was snarling at the taller man. He used more force than he intended, shaking off the hand on his wrist. “I’m not the one who hides behind a mask!”
Allister was well aware of his actions. He knew exactly how poorly this would turn, if the Deimos leader were a different kind of man. The fragile alliance between the two packs would shatter. All their hard work would be squandered. He would be to blame for it, due to archaic laws and the mere fact that this was Rody, an emotionally manipulative, conniving, brilliant tactician...
The white wolf knew himself well enough and how selfish he could be. There were certain things he wouldn’t allow himself to indulge in, lest he be reprimanded for not staying in his station, for not upholding the honor of his pack. Allister prided himself in his restraint, he reveled in control, but this damned omega just insisted on pushing all his buttons at once. If he knew the leader as well as he thought he did, then this was an open invitation. His scent was more than enough evidence for that.
Allister held the man’s chin, turning his head just so to see the scar on his cheek. Rody could have escaped if he truly wanted to, but he allowed himself to stay pinned against the desk. This wasn’t submission, but intrigue keeping him in place. “I’m making my intentions crystal clear, so what say you?”
Rody chewed the inside of his cheek. This long game of cat and mouse gnawed away at him. Allister had always shown some hint of attraction, but he’d never admit to that. Buttons popped and he’d worry about stitches later, after he thoroughly wrecked this man. He pushed aside equipment and scoped the omega up and onto the desk. Rody tried to take command as he pushed back and attempted to lick into the other’s mouth, but Allister would not have it. After tossing aside their shirts, the beta held him by the throat, a firm grip with just enough pressure to draw out a gasp. Rody weakly snarled, only to have his mouth claimed again.

“It’s like you’re seeking punishment.” Allister cooled his temper, as he took the omega by his scruff and dragged him to the ground. “You already ruined my trousers, so get them off.”
Rody was stuck on his knees, but he looked up at the beta with defiance in his eyes. “No.” He crossed his arms and didn’t dare move. If he wanted something, then he’d have to get it himself.
