So two things have happened this week. 1) My Macbook's screen stopped working, causing me to send it off to be repaired. I tried to back up my project files but could not get it to work (the person at the Apple store thought there was something wrong with the HDMI out but if you ask me, I think the battery was dead), so I basically am living in constant fear that my Macbook will be wiped and I will lose a ton of project files I somehow forgot to backup.
Next, 2) I have been doing more tests on the YouTube upload limit, and many of these tests have failed.
Now, for those out of the loop as per why #2 matters... For about two years, I have been working with my father on an April Fools video hosted by him. The video is about three obscure 1960s sitcoms that he enjoys, and we have worked on this project together as he has had some serious health scares. It's been a very good bonding time, and right now I have about 40 hours done, with the original plan to release the content as a 32-hour video and two 12-hour videos.
However, now that I can not consistently break the 12-hour limit... Well, I am at a loss as to what I should do. I am very afraid of the monster this project has become. I fear the novelty would become annoying if the video was to be split. For instance - if you saw a 32-hour video come out, you'd think that was funny and you'd consider clicking it and trying to watch through some of it.
But if you saw five 12-hour videos posted in the span of two months... You would eventually grow annoyed and would not click on any of the videos. You'd think I expect you to have actually finished everything I already put out, and you'd not only not click on the newer videos but you'd give up on watching the first 12-hour video. (Reminder: all these videos are basically on the same subject, all hosted by my Dad.) This would not only result in a failed mini-series but would potentially result in none of my videos ever doing so well as the Victorious two-parter again. Perhaps my passive viewers would also decline. That is plausible.
So I am at a loss as to what to do. My first intuition is to keep this April Fools video together as I finish it - then I'll just try to upload it constantly until I brute force the system. But with that aside as the obvious main option, these are the only two choices I have left:
1) Only release the first 12-hour video on April Fools to Quinton Reviews. After this, plug the rest of the content on Quinton Re2s. Encourage the audience to finish the videos there via a playlist.
2) Give up on all anxieties and release ALL videos on the main channel. Pray that Dad hosting the channel becomes an extreme viral sensation and that people will somehow binge each video in full if given enough time between releases. (In this situation, I'd probably release the content every two weeks - resulting in the videos being perfectly spaced between April 1 and Father's Day) Also pray that Dad hosting the channel will not result in people becoming angry when I, a less charming host, eventually come back.
It's hard not to have this on my mind a lot. I feel like YouTube, by enforcing the 12-hour limit, is asking me to choose between two options: alienating my fans or disappointing my father. I'd love to know what you all think - what you'd do as creators, what you'd want as fans, and what you'd think as a casual viewer glancing through a window.
Personally, I think I wouldn't be so hung up on this if it wasn't for the fact that The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres and Petticoat Junction are all... Old obscure shows that would not make good clickbait. Having one video about these shows flop wouldn't matter. But having FIVE flops might actually ruin my life. I feel I've been put in an awful situation... By my own pious nature.

I'll definitely watch those dad sitcom videos even if it is five videos! Though I hope YouTube will stop being an ass about this soon

Just subbed but hearing that the Beverley Hillbillies is considered obscure is wild to me. Was on tv down here in Oz heaps as a kid and same with my mum. (I now have 'oil that is, black gold' stuck in my head... not that its ever that far, it's so weird what gets stuck in your head as a child that you just carry with you for fucking ever.)

Hey Quinton, I’m a new Patron, I loved your first six hours of the Sam & Cat video, I’m sorry to hear your having trouble with your potentially lost program files and the twelve hour video limit, I had the same problem with my gaming PC, I sent it off and and I had to reinstall everything.🤦♂️as for the 32 hour video issue, I’ve seen entire video games on YouTube so I think if you just brute force it, YouTube should eventually give in. I was initially 100% team brute force or pester people at YouTube for as long as it takes but the idea about timing it with Father’s Day is actually so sweet? I think especially since it is simultaneously a very personal thing and also relevant to your straight-up-whole-ass-income-situation, at the end of the day this is something you should just go with your gut on. Obviously knowing the context, it is so frustrating to think about people getting pissy over you uploading things you worked hard on on your own channel that they don’t have to watch, but that shit does happen and the algorithm is brutal. Either way, you have more basically unwavering support and legitimate respect as a creator than you probably know, so if you want to release it on your own terms, you probably will be fine either way. But imo having things unlisted or on Re 2s feels like hiding part of the project in a way that doesn’t seem to do it justice. You will figure it out!!!
Maybe this has been suggested before, but you could release it as a playlist challenge. If you upload all the videos and release them at once in a playlist, you could challenge people to watch all of the videos. Having multiple videos would also serve as good check points for people, so they'd be more inclined to continue watching, particularly if they're of a completist mentality. Also, that's multiple videos for your channel. This has the added benefit of any of the sections reaching different audiences, particularly given the way in which YT is currently recommending content. Another option is to set the videos as premiers. That way you can have the videos come out live, initially and when one part ends, the next premier begins. This might be a good way to make an event of it. Once they're released, you could list them in their own playlist. The premier option has the added benefit of a live chat replay so people who are rewatching can enjoy the craziness that is YouTube live commentary! Either way, I enjoy your long form content. I can see how much you care about the content you make. I'll be sure to watch them when they come out!
honestly i think 3/12 hour videos uploaded in a row same day would be as funny as the 32 hour video. maybe you could upload one publically and then hide the other two, and have their links in the description? :0
I would definitely try to brute force the 12-hour limit if possible, as I think the 24+ hour video was a big part of the bit.
