Fair enough. And portals are fun.

Foxmoor Fiction

Less worried about damage due to friction, than I am pointing out that friction would inevitably act as a brake on how fast the wind could go. The friction would also create turbulence, etc... Creating a tunnel that is infinitely smooth is not possible with any materials that Caden currently has. Regardless, next chapter deals with some of the fun portal stuff.

Thats is the the space between the portals is open, if its in it sown perfectly smooth container, that should let it continuously accelerate. And initial air/wind direction could be set to be down, and that direction constantly maintained with the dungeon settings. Any potential friction damage is mitigated by the reinforcement enchantment. The whole setup doesn’t even need to be that big, like just the one teleport cylinder on top of other. Then Caden gets million mile per hour wind some time the next day. Once those speeds get added to the settings, having two just barely touching might generate enough turbulence and friction (or at least this well below the combustion/explosion level) to make lighting from static electricity. Wound’t even need to make the copper-coil-magnet setup to get electricity.

Foxmoor Fiction

Friction is heavily related to velocity, because it is dependent on force. Also, the tunnel is necessary to create constant acceleration without diffusing that force. That means that there would be increasing force acting against the wind. Perhaps even more important, the air would start to heat up and that would act as a force to push the air upwards against the flow.

Foxmoor Fiction

True, but I do wonder how much friction will slow down the flow of air. I do understand the basics of your idea though: A single portal between a low altitude and high altitude point in a large vertical tunnel would be interesting, because a portal connects two points in space to make them overlap into a single space. Air would keep flowing into the lower part of the portal and coming out the higher one.

Oh I know about just how bad it can get with accelerating objects in a vacuum chamber. Im talking about accelerating the air itself by making it fall. The wall is probably (absolutely) need high power reinforcement enchantment to minimize air erosion, but nonetheless getting Machs counting in the triple digits at least.

Foxmoor Fiction

Natural friction with anything to the side of the portal would slow things down. Dropping an object through portals in a vacuum on the other hand...

Did some math for the acceleration, in just a day (from pretty much stationary), the air would have gotten to just over 3 million km/h. I think Caden would be set for wind speed, if there isn’t some safety system side to prevent wind that could genuinely blow out mountains.

Nice, that could help with making the dungeon that more mysterious, and way more deadly.

abowden

Awesome. I can't wait to see what he achieved by thinking with portals. I hope he makes a portal gun and a suspiciously aperture like section.of test chambers.

I enjoyed a lot of thing when reading this chapter, thank author, can't wait for the next one now :)

Zarik0

Some good idea here :P

Foxmoor Fiction

So it is... I wish patreon wouldn't screw up the formatting so much.

That is quite the leap in teleportation. Then is seeing if he can get to making proper stargate portal, or somehow hiding it in a door. Or a TF2 teleport pad. And obviously soon try out non-Euclidian spaces. Something he might be able to do as well now with it, he could make a portal pair at the too and bottom of a cylinder, then let his highest speed wind blow down, and let it continuously “fall” to speed up. If gravity still applies between the two portals. That should get him hypersonic winds in no time. And always thanks for the chapter!

Some of the words are smushed together. Especially in that last sentence.
