I go through each of the pieces as well as the rejected drafts and my thinking behind them, talking about some new lessons I've learnt tackling this latest set. I very much begin with line sketches first, for some pieces where it was imperative to figure out values as soon as possible, I jump into a grayscale plan right away! Sometime however, I have a full idea of the color palette I will use and can begin with filling them in right away. Overall it's a very flexible process!

Hi, really inspiring set and great to hear you discuss your thoughts behind the pieces. I was wondering: do you make an initial line sketch before the first colour sketches? Or do you directly start with colour? I noticed in other videos (like the mega tutorial) you first sketch with lines but didn’t see that here. Have your methods changed? And if so, why? Thanks again!

Sorry for the late reply! It really depends - Multiply is great for adding local values as they allow a clean placement and adjustment, as well as adding a set of shadows for a certain light source. Personally I tend to use it early in the process, and then paint organically afterwards.

when you draw in black and white do you put it in multiply mode to draw on top ? and what canvas format do you use for this type of drawing on photoshop ? btw great work as always

I find the best results usually come with an anchoring set of references to help you figure out if the angle/lighting is exactly what you want and act as a set of guardrails. Beyond that I mostly just use my own understanding of facial structure and lighting to execute the piece.

Do you just draw their faces from your imagination or do you use references?

Thanks! Funnily enough the time I tried a cintiq years ago it died on me within a month - ended up returning to (and sticking to) the Wacom Intuos Small. It works well for my pretty imprecise style of building up brushstrokes, and its very affordable to replace to boot! Bonus: I can store a couple of spares as well :)

Very interesting listening to insights to this set! It helps a lot to incorporate some of the practices into my own process. Cant wait to see what you have in store for the next month. p.s. After all the trials mountain didn't make it into any of the pieces :')

I'm glad it sounded more fresh! I tend to detach myself pretty quickly once a set is done (moving on the the next stuff and such), so it's good I'm getting in this habit. Struggle is very normal indeed, as the alternative is just boredom!

Recording process steps right after completing the set makes a big difference - at least in your voice! It was nice to hear your enthusiasm so clearly :) The set is gorgeus, very fresh and captivating! As for the struggle... struggle means growth, right?
