Equality State Of Mind

Fuck you guys for Short Cuts. I hope you make it funny. Somehow....

Robby Gross

Hesse is the most stoned a podcast host has ever been in this ep

Kevin Spicer

Loved this thanks guys. Learned about altman from last season on movie mindset will check out.

noah m koebler

Only two of the stories were directly taken from Carver’s writing, so much water so close to home and a small good thing, but Altman was a huge fan and he totally captures the spirit of Carver’s work perfectly. Also popeye is one of my all time favorite movies, a movie that has me beaming for the full 2 hours

Michael Naatjes

What are the chances of a Neil Breen episode?

JASON

Short Cuts is not streaming anywhere right now. Fortunately I saw the theatrical releases of both films. I didn’t know shit about directors back then, but recognized these films were very special and my love affair with Robert Altman began.

James Possley

I am begging someone to please teach Hesse an adjective other than “crazy”

James Kellis

At the funeral scene in The Player, the screenwriter friend who delivers the eulogy is wearing the exact same outfit as Griffin's murder victim. As if the movie sees these unduly confident, untalented writers as clones, "breeding" too, like the clueless executives.

Steve L Busch

“I don’t know you” sings the jazz singer before she finds Zoe in the garage…

Jason Matthews

One of my all time favourite horror movies, if indeed that's what it is.

ffffffff

i didn't realize the player was by Michael Tolkin - you guys gotta do The Rapture, that movie is insane

Nick Swartz

honestly thought it was Assigned Lawyer at Birth

SkinnyTonySoprano

I saw an interview with buck henry on letterman Where he brought up that the graduate 2 was an actual pitch he received

Bugger Off

Please! Next year drag Felix on and review Gosford Park

Johan Hellis Timmås

I'm still wating for the Gosford Park ep. feat Felix.

Broadway Joe

Just search for it on archive.org

buttface

It's time to scrap the whole project imo

Sam Schick

Raymond Carver is a giant.

Seth

The scene in The Player where Griffin goes into the police station and assumes Whoopi Goldberg wants to meet in her office and she tells him to sit down in front of everyone reminded me so much of the scene in McCabe and Mrs Miller where Beatty goes to talk business with Butler and tries to meet in the back room for privacy but Butler tells him to sit down and talk in front of all of his men. Almost seemed like a callback or something

snafujesus

Carver is due a little more credit for Short Cuts here, but I’ve always appreciated Altman as a brilliant orchestrator of some very heavy material in a way that makes it sing.

VVulpes

Great story. Carver was great. The dead woman on the fishing trip is from Carver's So Much Water So Close to Home. A chilling story.

I saw “The Player” when it was first released. I was in college and a textbook for my Chicano film class featured a scene from The Player on the cover. The villain getting away with it was a mind-blowing concept at the time. I remember enjoying “Short Cuts” (as a Bay Area cat, I HAD to support Huey Lewis’s acting debut), but I never went down an Altman rabbit hole. Thanks for the inspiration and the japes. ✌🏽

Chris Brandon

I always wondered if Jack Black's dog kicking Motorcycle Cop character in Anchorman was meant to be a kind of homage to Short Cuts.

Mac

Just let Menaker talk movies. Can’t listen to Hesse and the other jokers just summarize scenes and say lines from the movie we just watched.

Andrew E Houston

I think I have sat down and watched Altman's Popeye at least 25 times in my life. It's time for number 26... Also a second watch of The Player

tropical dandy

One of my regulars worked with Altman starting with 1987’s “Beyond Therapy” and until he left the industry in the early 00s. He was a poster designer and did some amazing work, including one of the original Hellraiser posters. Altman smoked him out in his trailer when they first met to discuss poster ideas and said “Do you even know what this picture is about? …. Because I sure as fuck don’t and I guess we’re going to figure it out.” Absolute legend.

Last Years Man

My appreciation for Altman has only grown with age.

Dylan

Not sure if Hesse was joking about the Fred Ward fishing trip being its own movie. I’m not very smart. But that movie is called Jindabyne.

Marc Silverstein

I can only find Short Cuts in Czech dub on YouTube with no english

The Children of Jack Acid

(Though "Keep It Going!" is amazing no matter what.)

The Children of Jack Acid

I like Nashville... but he should have hired singers and taught them to act, rather than picking his favorite actors and failing to get them to sing well. It tarnishes the whole film.

George Lochinski

Oh man Three Women and Brewster wd be so so so tight

Kirstwb

Tim robbins is such a babe

jake.durazno

been waiting for this short cuts ep for years and years

instain_mother

the dying kid and the cake is a Raymond Carver short story called A Small, Good Thing and its haunted me ever since AP lit in high school

Rory Schreiber

Need some love for California Split

The Children of Jack Acid

Everytime I experience an earthquake here in Los Angeles, it makes me want to get drunk, get under a doorway with Lily Tomlin, and laugh like Tom Waits.

Christian Johnson

Baptized with genitalia, you are blessed

Vic

julianne moore popping off while trying to dry her pants was the first time I saw nudity in a movie. Thanks robert

Michael S. Judge

Tim Kaine and Josh Hawley went there too, and they're a lot more representative

Michael S. Judge

I went to the same militant right-wing Jesuit high school as Robert Altman, and anybody who comes out of there liking human beings as much as he apparently did must've been smocking on the loundest cusch blount

THEKILLERWHALE

Skoal has never looked so sexy.

Christian Johnson

Can't forget about the Lori Singer skinny dipping scene in "Short Cuts" 🥵

JD

also reccommended: Kansas City, his 3rd 90s masterpiece!
