Without spoiling anything, I can say this: Samechiel has been coasting on a finite energy supply since her fall, once her halo was broken she never received any more, and has been living off her reserves. This could never last forever, eventually she will run out, and she probably used a lot of it fighting Tsadiel and summoning Semjaza~ ;3; Samechiel is stubborn and won't convert to dark energies like other fallen, so she's probably running on such a low battery that Alex isn't really absorbing much anymore~ (I say "probably" because I don't want to give a definite answer, I'll let the books do that~)
