road trip along route 66 (throwback thursday)
🕑 Added 2024-11-07 08:00:05 +0000 UTCin july 2020, we decided that we needed to get out of the house, and the most logical way to do it at the time was to go on a long road trip, and why not do it along the historical route 66?
route 66 used to be the primary way of getting from east to west in the US before the interstates were built, and tons of towns, hotels, restaurants, and roadside attractions were built around it. but when the interstate was built, most of those businesses went broke. some cities just ceased to exist. so when you take the drive, you get to see a largely untouched version of 1950s america. it's an experience.
and tbh, this was probably one of the most memorable trips we've ever taken. we met up with route 66 in amarillo, texas (about halfway) and started at cadillac ranch and drove it all the way out to santa monica, california (the end of the route). we did stop in the middle in joshua tree, california (those photos will be posted next week) and we took a few detours on the way back, including a stop at the border with mexico, a mostly abandoned resort town, and an airplane graveyard.
