> Let's try this again... I had a notification for a new comment from you, and by the time I clicked through, it had gone. I thought it was a toss-up between you rethinking a theory immediately after hitting post, or else posting a comment so long that you broke patreon. :p > It sounds like the collars also have some sort of compulsion that prevents their wearers from noticing that anything weird's going on with their resposnes or attitude tbh, I'm not hugely happy with how I've handled Mary between this chapter and a certain future event. I feel it's lacking a little in foreshadowing, which kinda makes a later explanation feel like it comes out of nowhere.

Let's try this again.... > A pile of ash by the side of the bath was all that remained of her clothing, already 'cleaned' via the judicious application of Ignis. LUL > "Shit..." declared Wendy, despite no longer being covered in it. Ah, so she *crapped* herself. I was thinking she peed herself > she didn't believe in miracles That's pretty ironic, given what's about to happen. (Yes, I realize she's referring to chance-based miracles here.) > "So, there was no assassination attempt. It was all staged, and Christine got rid of me in case I noticed something off and said something I shouldn't in front of Thomas," sighed Wendy. Doesn't sound like Wendy was in on the plot. Not that that's particularly surprising. > "Damn that Christine!" she yelled, launching herself out of the water and breaking into a sprint. "How dare she make me miss that!" LUL > I couldn't help notice that I could see nothing in that trunk other than multiple copies of the same uniform, some underwear and a single lonely nightie. I mean, Katie had less than that, and she wasn't even a slave. (Though not for lack of trying on some people's part.) > "Mary wasn't poisoned, as such," said Christine. "She was suffering from miasma exposure." > The way Wendy's jaw dropped would have been comical had I not been in such a foul mood. Oh, yeah, Wendy *definitely* wasn't in on the plot. > Mary was now looking normal, mana once again expelled from her body, which had been left completely void. *Completely* void? As in no tendril of mana from the collar to Mary's brain? Interesting... Thinking about it, there's a good chance that being a hero, Thomas might be immune to miasma poisoning, which means that devil-fire wouldn't have worked on him, and the demons probably would have known that. > "You shouldn't be getting out of bed. Please stay where you are," said Christine, reminding me that the rest of the room existed. > "It's okay, I'm fully recovered," said Mary, who was indeed now standing upright, showing no sign of her earlier weakness. Oh my. Did Mary just disobey an order?! > Mana sight showed Mary as a complete void. There wasn't a single trace of mana within her. Not even linking her collar up to her brain. Ha. I was right! > "Sorry, what?" asked Wendy, once again only avoiding depositing her jaw on the floor because human anatomy didn't allow for it. LUL > "What new attitude? Oh, Mistress, you're bleeding!" said Mary It sounds like the collars also have some sort of compulsion that prevents their wearers from noticing that anything weird's going on with their resposnes or attitude. Now, the question is whether Miraculum just broke this particular collar and undid its brainwashing, or if Mary's now just outright immune to slave collars. Also, it seems like heroes are essentially demigods. The way spellcasting works for them is more like the gods than like mortals.
