Yeah, nothing wrong with what-ifs. :)

Oh, I'm rubbing my hands at the idea of the not-a-philosopher Peter slogging with a mechanically-speaking AI over the definition of "good", "correct", "legal", "moral" and all those other joyously loaded and deviously vague terms! Or, well, seeing his current achievements, how he'll manage to solve or postpone the problem in the way that strains the insight part of his brain the least. Which could also be funny. I wonder what would have happened if he had given that answer before the whole Earth fiasco, and that last "killing a sapient being is sometimes the correct course of action" hadn't been there. Do you take what-ifs as ideas for side stories? :D If so: - Peter arranges things to spend a few days under the Law before being released, to see what that's like. How are his feelings changed by the experience (during and after the fact)? - To protect Erryn's world from other potential and unanticipated catastrophes, the administrators set up a rotation where one and only one person is un-lawified at a time, for a set period (say, one year), with the ability to alert the system in case of an emergency. A person can only be chosen once in their life. We follow the new Catastrophe Overseer as he/she learns the truth about the Law and the history of their job. - What if Peter and Cluma decided to adopt the orphaned children-turned-monsters? Or if Peter takes them under his wings, at least, if they have family left. - The System failure actually lasted longer, resulting in Peter and Blobby's souls merging beyond the point where the System was able to see them as separate. Thus, it does not resume maintaining their integrity after its functions are restored. What happens?

Yeah, perhaps I should replace 'murder' with 'killing' in that last paragraph. "To apply the Law to an unwilling sapient being is equivalent to death. Killing a sapient being is universally wrong. Killing a sapient being is sometimes the correct course of action."

Rande Knight

Murder is a legal term that defines when a killing is illegal. Killing a sapient is sometimes legal. eg, the previous chapters self-defence. Once you separate murder from killing, things become a lot simpler. Also language changes over time. Kill used to be the same as murder in the days when 'Thou shalt not kill' was being written, and slaughter was used instead.
