He was asked a question by a guy who already doubts him, that he didn't know the answer to and sort of panicked. I've been careful to limit the things that Jon remembers from his history lessons so far, so that it doesn't seem like he has the ASOIAF wiki in front of him. As a boy, he paid attention to the cooler parts of history and ignored the rest, like when and how exactly Laenor died. This lie was foolish and will have consequences down the line, though not necessarily for Jon himself.

Jon's lie to Laenor doesn't make sense. Aegon III and Viserys II were born before the DotD, so Laenor would have to have died before then. Jon's lie of Laenor dying in a threeway battle alongside Seasmoke would unravel quite easily once he spills just a few more details. He could have instead said something like Laenor dying in decade before the DotD.
