Hex and Dutch for Temperance
🕑 Added 2016-12-07 00:37:06 +0000 UTC We're entering the final months of work for Temperance. This winter I'll be finishing the last few sets, and then starting in January I will be working on the book with an amazing graphic designer I collaborated with all the way back when Nicole and I were doing Uncropped Magazine.Making physical things from this work that exists predominately in the digital world is a lot of fun. There is so much I can't control about how you all experience each photo delivered over the internet. Your monitors resolution, calibration, the viewing angle, and so much more will affect how my work comes to you, so as I see a piece roll off the printer I know that we will be seeing the same print, magazine or book.
I do struggle with what the future of this medium, or all art is though, will we keep moving away from holding real thing in our hands? Is creating a physical copy of art important, or just a further waste of resources, since the idea can be conveyed digitally? I don't know. I cherish the physical works I have. They keep me motivated, and inspired to work on creating pieces that will inspire, and bring out emotions in others. As a creator this feeling is sort of the best I can strive for.
I guess all artists probably struggle with what sometimes feels like the futility of making things. I read a Ginsberg quote that pulled me out of one of those spirals were everything feels pointless.
“Well, while I'm here I'll do the work — and what's the work? To ease the pain of living"

Yep, between the move and the election I've definitely been off balance, and not as productive as I am used to being.

I've been in one of those sprials since the election (that sounds so lame to say but the election did correspond with me fully weening off my antidepressant). Anyway, it's hard for me to fully absorb the fear of everything going digital because I am so attached to having physical copies of the books I read despite how inconvenient my continued ownership of them can be. I truly believe there will always be a market for tangible art, it just requires a lot of searching/advertising and attributing value in unique ways.

The physical thing is *evidence* - stimulus to take a few steps toward a shared experience ? Prints you have made for me are certainly prized items to me ! I may not have that experience - but I am allowed my experience holding and view .... it is an emotional sarsen stone. The place we meet - excited when you have something in process - finest when near completion ? ~ always love the *doing* - cheers !
