A portrait Session with June St Paul
🕑 Added 2015-01-23 23:57:16 +0000 UTC If you live on the east coast especially in New York or Pennsylvania then you know that New Jersey is a state typically relegated to multiple negative stereotypes, but a few of us have found a beautiful oasis in the Pine Barrens of southern Jersey. Its our summertime watering hole for swimming, shooting, and a generally off the beaten path. We call it secret lake.Last summer I took a trip to our favorite spot with June St. Paul. Mostly we were all looking to swim, but I was lucky enough to shoot with June for about half an hour when some cloud cover came in, and made for some fantastic light. Anyone who has tried it knows that sand/water pretty much beaches in general are the worst places to bring your gear, but its worth it when you can get photos like these.
This series was shot entirely with my Canon 70-200mm F2.8L lens. I chose a longer lens because while our lake is beautiful compositionally its very hard to work with on a wide lens. I've tried many times, so I went instead for a telephoto that would let me isolate the subject.
This also worked well for moments that the sun came back out. I find the compression really helps if you are in harder light, as it minimizes the distracting elements of multiple shadows.
