i sketch out a basic form for the mechanical parts, but after the major joints and whatnot are sketched out i just improvise!

I am always curious about the thought process of the mechanical detail of the character. there is clearly some good amount of thought that goes into it, but how much do you plan the mechanical detail beforehand?
