It's probably also a call to Kanji just being difficult in general and that's why the announcer got embarrassed. It's easy to not know or confuse two Kanji when you have two other written alphabets and thousands of characters in Kanji to know

Goku's name is spelled in Kanji in Japanese, specifically 悟空. Kanji typically have multiple pronounciations, so if the Announcer had never met someone called "Goku" before he might not know how it is pronounced. Like how "ough" in English has like 10 different pronounciations.
Getting Goku's name wrong doesn't translate to English well. His name was probably written in some weird Kanji.
