[Frog] Chapter 77: Spider-Woman.. We Can’t Keep Up With Her
🕑 Added 2024-09-08 07:59:29 +0000 UTCHigh above New York City, on top of a building:
"Red Queen, are you sure this is really safe?" Gwen stood at the edge, her arms spread wide. Underneath her arms, there were glider-like spider webs.
"Miss Gwen, the new Spider suit is equipped with glider webs that allow you to glide for short periods when descending from high places," Red Queen responded.
"The material used for the glider wings is highly elastic, ensuring it can withstand wind pressure without being damaged. During your glide, I’ll also guide you on how to adjust your posture."
Through Gwen's eyes, the world was now filled with Red Queen's digital analysis.
"Alright, then there's no problem," Gwen said, leaping off the rooftop.
She felt the powerful wind pressure against her. After a moment, Gwen spread her arms, and she began gliding through the sky.
Back at the balcony, Alan and Pikachu watched as Gwen soared overhead.
"It looks like Gwen is doing pretty well with that new suit," Alan commented.
"Pika... Pika..." Pikachu chirped.
Alan glanced at Pikachu, perched on his shoulder, and raised an eyebrow. "You think it looks fun and want a suit like that too?"
"Pikachu..." Pikachu quickly nodded.
Alan looked at Pikachu and said, "It’s not impossible. I’ll see if I can design something later."
With that, Alan turned and walked back inside, with Pikachu happily trailing behind.
Meanwhile, Gwen, clad in her new Spider suit, was swinging toward the NYPD headquarters.
"Red Queen, where’s my dad right now?"
"Mr. George is still inside the precinct. Due to this morning's reports, the NYPD is now surrounded by reporters, all wanting to interview him."
Gwen thought for a moment, then asked, "Is this case really that sensational?"
"Not exactly, Miss Gwen. Last night, major cases were solved across various precincts in New York. The media believes it’s due to the effective leadership of the NYPD’s commissioner, which is why they’re all clamoring to interview Mr. George, hoping to spread his heroic deeds."
Gwen frowned. Something didn’t feel right, but she couldn’t quite figure out what it was.
"Red Queen, find me a nearby spot where I can hide. I need to ensure my dad’s safety."
"Understood."
Meanwhile, at the base of the Fisk Tower:
A team of lawyers blocked the entrance. Janie stood at the front, glaring at the middle-aged men in gray suits before her.
"Miss Janie, good day. This is the arrest warrant we’ve obtained from the court. Please do not interfere with our work. We’re here to arrest Mr. Fisk."
Seeing the arrest warrant, Janie's expression darkened further. Yesterday was already filled with trouble, and now, things had gotten worse, with an arrest warrant delivered right to their door. But she had no choice but to stand firm and block their way.
"Sir, I’m sorry, but my client has a severe heart condition. He’s currently resting. If you charge in recklessly and scare him, who will be responsible for his safety?" Janie threatened.
In this country, everything is handled according to legal procedures. If you have an arrest warrant, you can arrest someone. However, if your actions lead to the suspect’s death during the arrest, you’ll be infringing on their rights, and the court will hold you accountable.
"Miss Janie, you say your client has a severe heart condition. Do you have any evidence to support that?" the lead man in the gray suit asked, putting away the arrest warrant.
"Of course." A lawyer behind Janie handed her a document. "This contains proof from reputable hospitals. If you don’t believe it, you can open it and check. If you still doubt it, you can call the hospital or send someone to verify it."
The men in gray suits frowned. They knew these tactics were likely fraudulent, but the documents themselves were genuine.
In this capitalist society, as long as you have financial connections with hospital management, you can obtain any proof you need.
A heart disease diagnosis was nothing, compared to the fact that even death certificates could be forged.
"When can we meet the suspect, Mr. Fisk?" one of the men asked.
Janie replied sternly, "At the very least, wait until my client has rested and is ready to see you."
The men scowled, realizing this was just a delay tactic.
Upstairs, Fisk’s expression was just as grim. He stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking down at the company entrance.
Ever since he suspected that Nick Fury was behind this, Fisk knew that he had no protection left. But what puzzled him was why Nick Fury was targeting him in the first place.
A subordinate approached from behind Kingpin and said, "Boss, the NYPD has come with an arrest warrant. Attorney Janie is stalling them. What should we do next, Boss?"
Kingpin remained silent, and the subordinate didn’t dare to press further. After all, the bloodstains on Kingpin’s white suit hadn't even dried yet. Word had it that just earlier in the basement, he had crushed someone to death out of anger and, still unsatisfied, had even desecrated the corpse.
After venting enough, he returned to his office. As for the mangled body, it was dumped into the sewer to be disposed of.
In Kingpin's hand was a small cell phone. Stored in it was the phone number of S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury. As he looked down, seeing not only detectives but also a large group of reporters swarming outside, he finally spoke, "You go down first. Tell Janie to stall them a bit longer."
"Understood, Boss," the subordinate replied.
After much hesitation, Kingpin finally dialed the number on the phone. Even if he were to die, he wanted to understand why. He needed to know why Nick Fury wanted him dead. If it was a matter of his value, then there might still be room for negotiation. As long as Nick Fury was willing to relent, everything could be resolved.
At S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, Nick Fury stood on a platform, overseeing the agency's operations and monitoring every corner that could pose a threat to the United States. Behind him, Hill slowly approached.
"Boss, Natasha has already entered Stark Industries for the interview," Hill reported.
Nick Fury nodded and then asked, "Still no luck finding Spider-Woman’s true identity?"
Hill shook her head and continued, "Aside from videos taken by bystanders, every time Spider-Woman appears, the surveillance cameras in the area malfunction. We haven’t been able to track Spider-Woman's movements through surveillance at all. This suggests she’s likely a highly skilled hacker."
"Have we tried following her?" Fury asked.
"We’ve tried, but no one can keep up with her... speed," Hill replied, struggling to find the right word.
Every time S.H.I.E.L.D. agents caught sight of Spider-Woman, she would defeat the villains and then swing away on her webs before anyone could even think about tailing her. How could they track that?
Just as Fury was about to say something else, a phone on the top of Hill's stack of files began to ring.
"Kingpin? Why is he calling..."
