Some Ed

For what it's worth, when I was in the 5th grade, our school system started doing testing for autism in 4th graders. The way they described autism, it sounded really familiar. They talked about adding more testing for autism in the 8th grade, just in case they missed people, and i looked forward to when they'd do that... and it turned out to be when I was in the 9th grade. Because they actually weren't trying to find people with autism. They were trying to say they were handling this new concern people had. The community clearly wanted them to do something about it, but they were determined to do as little as they could get away with. And that's basically how I went until I was 50 before I actually was diagnosed with autism. I mean, if I actually desperately needed an official diagnosis I could've gotten it earlier. But I went into IT, and there are so many people on spectrum in IT, accommodations for people on spectrum are actually pretty standard just for people in the industry. It's my understanding that ADHD diagnosis tended to be pretty similar around that same time - including the bit where I probably could've gotten a diagnosis at any point just by going to the right kind of doctor and asking to be tested for it. I don't really know, I've never actually been diagnosed with it. But small doses of caffeine help me sleep, which is as I understand it a fairly good indication that if I were to ask to be tested, they'd say I had it.

ADHD is so common a diagnosis it's almost taken for granted.
