Stones and Thrones: Anglo-Saxon England (Part II)

To the fyrd archers and the priest we now add two new historical figures: the slingers, humble farmers defending their land with a simple weapon, and the figure of Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians, the warrior queen who defied the Vikings at the dawn of the 10th century.
Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians (c. 870–918)

Daughter of Alfred the Great, Æthelflæd became the ruler of Mercia after the death of her husband Æthelred in 911, taking the title hlæfdige Myrcna, “Lady of the Mercians”. For seven years she personally directed campaigns against the Vikings, ordered the building of fortified burhs at key points, and secured Mercia’s survival at a decisive moment for England.
In 917 she captured Derby, one of the Five Danish Boroughs, and in 918 Leicester submitted to her army. Shortly before her death, York was prepared to accept her overlordship. The miniature represents her in her most iconic role: a warrior queen and strategist, receiving a messenger during campaign, accompanied by a friar who embodies the inseparable union of political power and spiritual authority in 10th-century England.
Anglo-Saxon Fyrdmen Slingers
“The sling is the weapon of the poor, yet in firm hands it may bring down kings.”
The slingers were part of the fyrd, the Anglo-Saxon levy of free men and farmers summoned to defend their land. While spear and shield were the common weapons of war, the sling remained a simple, cheap, and effective tool, its use ingrained in rural life.
On the battlefield, slingers stood in the rear ranks, harassing the enemy, disrupting formations, and supporting better-armed warriors. Their impact lay not in gleaming arms but in skill born of habit: the same hand that drove birds from the fields could hurl a stone that decided a skirmish. They embody how the kingdom’s defense rested as much on humble peasants as on the steel of the thegns.

En esta segunda entrega del mes en el Tier The Adventurer seguimos recorriendo la Inglaterra anglosajona. A los arqueros y al sacerdote del fyrd se suman ahora dos nuevas piezas históricas: los honderos, campesinos que con un arma humilde defendían sus tierras, y la figura de Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians, la reina guerrera que desafió a los vikingos en los albores del siglo X.

Honderos del fyrd anglosajón

Los honderos eran parte del fyrd, la leva popular anglosajona que reunía a campesinos y hombres libres bajo las órdenes de su rey o señor. Aunque la lanza y el escudo eran las armas más habituales, la honda era un recurso sencillo, barato y eficaz, cuya práctica formaba parte de la vida rural.
En la guerra, los honderos se situaban en la retaguardia para hostigar al enemigo, desgastar sus líneas y cubrir a los guerreros mejor armados. Su impacto no residía en el brillo de la panoplia, sino en la precisión nacida de años de costumbre: la misma mano que ahuyentaba aves de los campos podía lanzar la piedra que decidía una escaramuza. Eran, en suma, un ejemplo de cómo la defensa del reino dependía tanto de la humildad campesina como del acero de los thegns.
