When the enemy approached and smoke rose above the villages, it was not the king who stood in their way—it was the ealdorman.
The ealdorman was the king’s appointed warleader in each region, responsible for mustering the fyrd: a levy of free men—ceorls and thegns—summoned in times of war. He was not a distant commander; he fought beside his men. His authority was built on presence, not distance.
Leofwine is depicted here in the act of forming the shieldwall. His sword points forward—not to strike, but to place and direct. Beside him, the standard is driven into the soil, marking the center of the line, and the horn calls out across the field, summoning the last to take their place.
There is no grandeur here. Only duty, coordination, and tension.

Cuando el enemigo se acercaba y las aldeas alzaban humo, no era un rey quien respondía el primer golpe. Era el ealdorman.
El ealdorman era el caudillo local designado por el rey, responsable de reunir al fyrd, la leva territorial formada por ceorls y thegns. No era un general de retaguardia: luchaba al frente, junto a los suyos, porque la lealtad en la línea se forjaba con ejemplo, no con títulos.
Leofwine está representado aquí en el momento exacto de formar el muro de escudos. Su brazo se alza, no para golpear, sino para señalar el lugar que cada hombre debe ocupar. A su lado, el estandarte se clava en la tierra como punto de reunión y juramento, y el cuerno de guerra resuena por encima del campo, convocando a los últimos en llegar.
No hay épica ni poesía en este gesto. Solo deber, coordinación y tensión.
