Like some other people have suggested, Ranked Choice Voting https://ballotpedia.org/Ranked-choice_voting_(RCV) You could also look into letting people with deeper pockets buy additional votes

The more I though about it the more I realized that (a) it's way too complicated, and (b) could produce wild swing where a few people basically decide the vote.

You could do some sort of preferential voting system, where votes for the characters with the least number of votes get rolled into the voter's pick with the next highest number of votes.

This is what i was referring to in my last comment. Yikes. But this probably does show that there's a lot of character diversity as the choices are more spread out. Also my character won cleanly so whatever lol.

Holy crud, I never saw a tie breaker this epic before. And 1 of my suggestions is among them and she won! And wow a theme suggestion of mine finally won and soundly! :O

One possibility is make it so the three votes are first, second and third choice - so even if three characters got five votes each chances are one will have more "first"s. Or get each voter to rank all the characters from most wanted to least, but that puts a lot more effort on the voters and means a lot more data to process.
