Behind the scenes EP15: Proper tensile testing

nice testing rig

Yes it is, at this moment I don't have another option. I've reprinted it and it can stretch indeed. Fortunately I'm mostly interested in its tensile strength which wont be affected too much. If it deforms too much I'll reprint it out of polycarbonate which hardly flexes, especially when testing ABS. I wish I had the right clamps, but at work this setup isn't used for tensile testing with samples like this. I'll tighten the top clamp better, thanks for mentioning :)

Is your base clamp 3d printed? It might be worth it to have an aluminium one made up for more accurate results. There may be some "stretch" in a 3d printed version, which could be inadvertently inflating the overall readings. It also appeared as if the cam-clamp on the head of the strain gage rotated slightly (6:00-6:22), but it may have been a perception/perspective illusion. Good luck with testing; can't wait to see the follow-up.

It indeed failed at that point and I mad the wall too thin which didn't help either xD I'm mostly curious how well I can get that layer adhesion :D That inspection machine is insane indeed! It's funny how things have become normal at work, but some things are just plain incredible. We have one of the fastest PCB assembly machines in the world and how this thing picks up the components, checks them visually, corrects them and places them is so cool! My goal for the future is to show more of the industrial things going on regarding 3D printing and manufacturing.

IDEA for the next Creality contest: 5-Axis Ender 3 ... haha!

Great news to hear that updates on "Project Rim" are in production. I re-watched it the other day and was wondering what next. If I remember correctly it failed along a layer line above the joint between the two parts. So better understanding layer adhesion, and the effects of extrusion multipliers would be really interesting. Handy that your dayjob has such awesome tools. Although my favourite still has to be the 3D X-Ray inspection machine.
