I lived in Johnson City until I was in my early 30s, then moved to Knoxville where you've got "Thunder Rd" aka Kingston Pike. I actually used to live right at Bearden Hill where the car crash that killed a moonshiner took place. There's a lot of sordid history in our neck of the woods!

So true! I'm from Bristol....just 25 minutes from JC. I've rode through Copperhead Rd. Still blows my mind.

Steve Earle was years ahead of his time, maybe decades. He was "Hot New Country" before all the big acts broke through in the 90s and 00s.

This song was huge hit when I was in college, 1988, especially in Tennessee where I'm originally from. Specifically Northeast TN, as the song is based in Johnson County (Mountain City), just north of where I was born. When I was growing up, there was always moonshine being made in those mountains, and when I was about ten or so, there was a huge bust of the other crop just a couple of miles from my house. I still remember the helicopters circling and agents coming and going. It was always an adventure up in those hills and hollers!
