Ch 17 – Induction
Wednesday, D – 6
I spent most of the day making plans for my section’s protective mission. On the plus side, I got word that a battery of Paladins—based out of the same military installation we’d park at before being bussed to the bunker – would be on hand. Sensors, cameras, and even a few observation masts (similar to a submarine’s periscope) as back up, allowed bunker security personnel to maintain a constant watch on the top side. Remotely operated turrets provided protection for the slope. Hatches allowed entry and exit at three points along the upper surface. A plussed up mortar platoon – three sections of four 81mm mortars each – was already in place, supporting the first rotation of militia troops we were to relieve. Each section was arranged to cover the ground facing the vertical sides of the mound. Militia were stationed to secure the ground near the vertical faces. A rotation of regular army squads guarded the slope. The section on the northeast face, which Lightning section had the center of, was detailed direct support for me and my men. That little fact did not rest easy in my mind.
I pored over the maps I was sent, with a quick check of online maps as well. The intel accompanying the maps was incredibly vague and not confidence building. But, the terrain matched, so presumably the rest of the map matched. Three entrances for the Bunker, one in each rock face. There was the large main door in the southwest face, with smaller utility doors in the other two. With this latest data in hand, I refined my battle plans. I fervently hoped the ‘battle’ part was only a contingent. I planned otherwise.
My next step was to add phase lines and mark defensive positions on the map. Then I wrote my op order. Using the Bunker’s secure email system, I sent both to my team leaders. They were to have their team level op orders ready on arrival.

Another scuffle broke out on the fifth day we were on guard. This time it was Bravo’s position. No one drew a weapon though. Nance and his men sent the interlopers packing with a few bruises and one skull well rung.
That afternoon, a small group approached Delta’s location. Once they were in visual range, they all got behind a tree or rock and took potshots for several minutes. Then they disappeared. A later recon found a ravine we’d not discovered and the prior force hadn’t mentioned. Maybe they hadn’t seen it either. It was small, only tall enough to conceal a man if he was crawling. When dinner arrived, the cook’s helpers informed us it was the last hot A’s we’d be getting. They offloaded several cases of MRE’s for each Team. The men carried them back to their AO’s after finishing dinner.

On the sixth day, we faced a dawn attack. This was no longer just random people stumbling into our lines, or desperate people pleading for a spot in the Bunker. Someone wanted to make a statement. We repelled the attack. Or, more likely, they withdrew after seeing what they were looking for.
After reporting the latest probe, Central ordered Thunder and Lightning forward. I passed the word down quickly and my team leaders rallied their men. We were on the move within forty minutes of getting the word. Somewhat less than ideal, because we were leaving behind well-prepared fighting positions. Each team broke out a few MRE’s per man into their rucks, then cached the rest at the current fighting positions before moving out. Once we reached our ordered location, half the men set to digging hasty positions while the other half kept watch.
We were on our third rotation of watch and work when the next attack hit. This time, it was clearly a probe. They were not expecting us here. That was probably the point of moving us forward. The aggressors pulled back after ten minutes.
As dusk fell, a larger force hit us. We repelled them again, but it got rather intense. Twygger and Riggs were both hit, but not critical. I called for evacuation of my wounded. Central said they’d send an aid team, with security escort – in the morning.
Around midnight, a strange buzzing noise took over the section comms net. I’d never heard jamming before, but given the effect on our comms, I think I’d just had my first taste of it. As it continued, I picked up a few garbled bits of transmissions. Something was happening. Someone didn’t want me to know about it. I dispatched Mike to check in with Delta. I headed for Bravo’s position, with a plan to meet him in Charlie’s AO to figure out what the hell was going on. Bravo seemed fine when I got there. I could hear fire coming from Charlie’s AO, and from Thunder’s as well. That gave me even more impetus.
I rushed towards Charlie’s sector as fast as I could. Mike met me just before I got there. He’d had to duck behind trees and dodge fire crossing behind Charlie. The panicked look on his face was cause for concern.
“Sergeant, Thunder pulled back. They sent out a message,” he checked his watch, “eleven minutes ago that they were taking heavy fire and were falling back.”
Oh, shit. Bravo was hanging in the wind with its flank exposed. And they were the flank of the section. I filled Dawson in on the situation, and took off for Bravo’s position with Mike on my heels. Firing erupted ahead of us before we got there. Less than a minute later, I could hear heavy fire behind me, near Charlie’s position.
It got worse. Bravo’s men began falling back. Mike and I joined in, helping to make it an orderly withdrawal, but the enemy kept coming. It was a full-on human wave attack. Mike tugged my sleeve. Downey, the Charlie rifleman nearest us, could be seen in the distance, falling back. Our line was collapsing. Looking back at Bravo, the running figures were a mix of my men and the enemy.
I checked my ammo. I had one magazine left. Mike was in the same strait. So was Tadiola, the Bravo rifleman nearest us. The others were engaged in hand to hand fighting.
I had one last duty to the Bunker, and then my only duties remained to my men. I snatched the handset off Mike’s vest. Steading my voice, to make sure I was heard clearly, I forced the fear down, so I did not rush. “Currahee, Currahee, Currahee. This is Lightning Six, we are being overrun. I say again, Lightning is overrun. Currahee, Currahee, Currahee.”
Only one word mattered in that transmission. One word that would trigger a hell storm.
A shot cracked off the tree beside me. Mike sighted in and returned fire before I could react. The kid was getting good. Maybe he would survive what was to come. Artillery was unavailable , but the mortars would still engage. They had a longer flight though. Course, at this range, it was just under a minute. Mike followed me as I made my way towards the nearest foxhole, shouting out ‘Currahee’ to my men. They picked up the cry and shouted it each way down our lines.
I’d chosen the word because it sounded like a battle cry – in fact, it often had been in the past – but my men and the gun bunnies both knew it would trigger every available fire support asset to pour fire into our area for one full minute. My men were warning each other that hell was inbound. The attackers merely thought we were trying to rally ourselves.
I lost track of the seconds as I fought the raiders at close range. Two mortar rounds detonated further down the line behind the guy I was fighting, then one off to my right, just behind our line. A shot from my lower right rang out and a bullet transited the man I was fighting, from below his ribs on the right and out his left shoulder. Then a hand grabbed my ankle and pulled me into the ditch. A massive roar rang in my ear, a weight fell on top of me, and the world went dark.
