Chapter 46 Nothing Special
🕑 Added 2024-06-02 10:30:34 +0000 UTCJohn was covered in blood, shot in the arm, but still able to hold a gun, indicating the wound wasn't too serious. What was more serious was the bleeding from his waist, with entry and exit wounds on his clothes indicating the bullet had passed through, a through-and-through wound.
Arthur reached out to help John up but found his limbs weak, and John also lacked the strength to stand. They had done everything they could; if they couldn't save John, it was simply fate.
"Watch out!"
John shouted in panic, aiming his gun in a direction and firing. Arthur turned around to see two people emerging from a wooden house, using a tree as cover and returning fire.
Using a tree as cover had a major drawback: the protected area was too small. While it could block bullets from Arthur and John's side, it was soon riddled with bullets from Rubber and George on the other side.
Arthur was puzzled. He tried to pull John up again, but he couldn't. He was unable to.
His limbs were weak, and after pulling John a bit, he was exhausted. John, partially lifted by Arthur, then fell back down.
"Ah... don't move me."
John screamed in pain from the fall. Arthur stopped trying to pull him up and nervously said, "There aren't many enemies!"
John covered the hole in his side with his hand, but couldn't stop the bleeding. Grimacing, he said, "Because everyone from the camp went to find you guys. Hurry, they'll be back soon!"
"How many enemies did you see?"
"At least a hundred."
"There are only twenty here..."
Arthur was still analyzing the enemy's strength compared to theirs when he heard Frank's angry roar.
"Why aren't you responding!"
Arthur and John turned to see Frank running towards them, his face contorted with anger, spitting as he shouted, "Didn't you hear the call? Why aren't you answering, why aren't you retreating!"
Arthur paused, feeling something swinging on his body. He glanced sideways and saw the earphone wire swinging with his movements.
Grabbing the wire and tugging it, he found that the earphone had been disconnected, right at the neck position.
"Uh, you're really lucky..."
Frank, feeling embarrassed for his outburst, grabbed John's arm, and Arthur also lent a hand, together pulling John up.
"Run! Run!"
Frank was urgent, looking at John, "Can you still move?"
John instinctively reached to press on his stomach wound. Frank, in a hurry, bent down, turned around, and lifted John onto his back.
"Hurry!"
Arthur followed. As the pain gradually subsided, his strength returned, but his steps were still unsteady, walking like a duck, swaying from side to side.
Frank carried a person faster than Arthur could walk, so Frank angrily said, "What are you dawdling for, hurry up!"
"I'll cover, I'll cover..."
The three hurried outside. No one chased them from the camp. At this moment, Frank said urgently, "Since there's no one in the camp, it means all the enemies have gone out to search for us. The most dangerous part is coming up. We have to escape the pursuit of a group of jungle warfare experts..."
"I told you earlier that the camp defense must be weak, but you were too timid to go in!"
Arthur didn't mind proving himself right and great afterward, but Frank was furious, "Can you just charge in with twenty people? Can you just rush in and bite like a Mad Dog when there are few people? If we hadn't covered you, you would've been shot dead long ago!"
John let Frank carry him but still turned to look at Arthur, "There were seven people in that room just now. How did you take them out and not die?"
John didn't drop his M16 rifle. As he turned to look at Arthur, the magazine bumped into Frank's face. Frank, annoyed, said, "You're almost dead, can you stop moving!"
Ignoring Frank, John continued to look at Arthur and urged, "Tell me quickly. If I die, I won't know the answer. Hurry, tell me, tell me!"
Arthur thought for a moment. He found that his memory of what had just happened was somewhat blurry. So, he simply said, "We just went in, killed them, and came out. Nothing special."
John was taken aback. He said, "You're... um... what was I going to say?"
Arthur remembered. There seemed to be five people in the wooden house, making a total of seven. John had killed two, and he had killed five. One of the five didn't have a gun, but Arthur decided not to mention that.
Just then, Arthur heard a swoosh, followed by two more. These were the sounds of bullets flying past.
Gritting his teeth, Frank quickened his pace and said with difficulty, "Someone is chasing us. Let's go!"
The camp was large, and people couldn't all be concentrated in one corner. It was likely that people from afar had rushed over upon hearing the noise. Additionally, those who had been sent outside to search might have returned or were trying to intercept Arthur and the others. So, the danger hadn't passed; it had only increased.
People who have lived here for a long time must be very familiar with the terrain. They knew where the swamps were, where the rivers flowed, and where the ground was hard. Therefore, if they didn't leave before the enemy surrounded or caught up, they wouldn't be able to escape.
They jogged out of the camp area, and the vegetation on the ground began to get denser. Frank's stamina was really good; he carried a person, and although his speed had slowed, he showed no signs of stopping.
They could already see Rubber and George. Each was holding a gun and firing at the pursuers behind Arthur and the others. However, Rubber quickly stopped shooting and urged, "Let's go!"
Without stopping, Frank, carrying John, ran ahead, while Arthur stopped beside Rubber. Rubber waved his hand and asked, "Why didn't you bring a rifle? I told you to bring a rifle..."
Rubber saw Arthur's earphone wire and sucked in a breath, saying, "You're really lucky!"
The earphone wire was broken even though it was right next to his face. Not dying in such a situation was indeed lucky.
With the earphone wire broken, Arthur naturally couldn't hear the call. Rubber couldn't blame Arthur anymore and could only urge, "Alternate covering each other, retreat!"
Arthur didn't catch up with Frank. He waited until Frank had walked about ten meters before following. Then, Rubber turned around and followed, holding his rifle on guard, while George quickly ran up again.
The two covered each other with their rifles. After running for dozens of meters, Rubber finally said, "Full-speed retreat!"
The five of them finally gathered together again. Rubber ran to the front of Frank, raised his rifle towards Frank, and Frank, with one hand, grabbed the rifle, then turned around and threw John down.
John weighed over a hundred pounds. Frank had carried him nearly two to three hundred meters on his back, which was quite impressive.
After Rubber put John on his back, he staggered for a moment. Then, after taking a few steps forward, he gritted his teeth and said, "Damn it, you need to lose weight!"
