Chapter 39 The Truth Is Here
🕑 Added 2024-06-01 19:03:19 +0000 UTCArthur realized that he and John seemed to have a big gap in their understanding of Captain.
"I think Captain is amazing. He is a very principled person. He is wise in his actions and words. He showed great strength when leading us to kill Juan, especially when negotiating with Peter, and when I first met him!"
Swallowing his saliva, Arthur said seriously, "He spoke to me in a dignified and oppressive voice, saying if you don't want to die, you'd better quickly figure out a way to convince me. At that time, I thought he was a very wise person. So how can you say that Captain is stupid and incompetent?"
John's mouth twitched a few times, then he sighed softly and said, "You idiot, when Captain asked you that, it's because he didn't know what to do. Out of sympathy, he didn't want to kill you. That's true. But even a fool knows that he can't let you go. So he asked you to figure it out yourself. If you have a way, he will spare you. If you don't..."
"What will happen?"
"He will kill you without feeling guilty."
This time it was Arthur who was stunned. He was extremely surprised and said, "Killing me won't make him feel guilty?"
"Of course not. Imagine if you were in his shoes. In that situation, you wouldn't let the person go, right? Come on, we're not superheroes who find rescuing people enjoyable. We don't have a sense of responsibility to save people. So if letting you go would be dangerous, of course, he would kill you."
Arthur swallowed his saliva and said, "But Captain quickly invited me to join. I thought... I thought... he must cherish talents, right? A boss who cherishes talents, how could he be stupid and incompetent?"
John frowned and said, "Talents are important, and everyone likes capable and smart people. But if you were the boss and all your subordinates were elites, would you still recruit someone you know nothing about? Is there a need for that? The fact that Captain recruited you only shows that he has no one useful, so he didn't want to let go of even a rookie like you."
"Are you insulting me?"
John sighed and said, "Believe me, if it were Danny, the one who took over the Flames of War from Mr. Smith, he would never want you. Besides Captain, everyone admits that Danny is a very remarkable guy. Why wouldn't Danny want you? Because he simply doesn't need you. He has too many elite hands to use."
Arthur sighed softly and said, "So Captain recruited me to join the King's Company because he had no one else to use?"
"Obviously. The King's Company is almost bankrupt!"
After revealing another earth-shattering secret, John said disdainfully, "Although Danny is indeed a bastard, he is going to list the Flames of War. Do you think Captain is great? The King's Company is facing bankruptcy. Do you see the difference?"
Arthur looked lost. He thought he had followed a good boss, but in the end, he found that his boss didn't seem as smart as he had imagined.
At least not as smart and capable as he had imagined.
"Okay, I understand... But at least Captain is very good at fighting, right?"
John smiled helplessly and said, "Yes, but anyone who retires from a special forces unit can do the Captain's job. But Danny's job, only Danny can do. That's why Mr. Smith made Danny the CEO of the Flames of War. But Captain doesn't understand this. He always thinks he should get a higher position."
Arthur looked at John for a long time, then suddenly said, "I always thought you and Captain had a good relationship."
"Our relationship is very good. I joined the army at eighteen, retired at twenty-two, and then followed as Captain until now. He saved me, and I saved him, so our relationship is very good. But having a good relationship doesn't prevent me from understanding what kind of person he is, right?"
"Yes, so what about you... What is Rubber's and George's relationship with Captain?"
John smirked and said, "Similar to mine, but George, Rubber, and the deceased Bison follow Captain because Captain promised to take them to find that money. So they didn't stay at the Flames of War but followed Captain until now. Understand?"
After finishing, John sighed and said, "So how could we give up? We can't give up. We've wasted so much time, put in so much effort, and finally made it here. How could we give up now?"
Arthur understood. He had nothing to say. After a moment of thought, he could only nod.
John sighed lightly and continued, "Captain can't give up, and I can't give up either. But you don't have to be like us, you know what I mean? Even if we really can't get that money this time, you can go do something else, take it slow, and just treat it as a dream. But the four of us, we can't wake up from this dream anymore."
He chuckled self-deprecatingly, then grabbed the door handle again.
Arthur whispered, "John, maybe things aren't as bad as you think. You just saw a person, who knows what the situation is. You don't have to be so pessimistic. And do you have a bad feeling?"
John whispered back, "I don't have a bad feeling. I don't know, I just... I just feel like maybe I don't have the luck to get rich. I've always had bad luck. I might not die so easily, but I just can't get rich. Damn it, what am I saying!"
Shaking his head, John didn't say anything else and refused to listen to Arthur. He walked away with an impatient look and slammed the door shut behind him.
Arthur opened the door and followed, but when he saw John stride back to his room door and slam it heavily, he hesitated for a moment. Finally, he took a step back, gently closed his door, and retreated inside.
