Sitting in the carriage, Shu Yu pointed ahead and said, "Since the city gates are open, I'm just taking a stroll outside the city to see if other places are safe."
Yuan Gui nodded in realization. "Miss Lu, you've really worked hard."
"You're planning to go back to the village, right? Come on, I'll take you there."
"No, no, no, there's no need to trouble you, Miss Lu. You can focus on your own matters, no need to take care of us," Granny Fang quickly declined.
However, Shu Yu had already given Ying Xi a signal, and he had jumped down from the carriage shaft and was assisting Granny Fang to get onto the carriage.
Shu Yu said, "It's not a trouble. I'm just wandering around anyway without any specific destination. It's a good opportunity to go to your village and have a look. You can also take the chance to introduce me."
After hearing Shu Yu's explanation, Granny Fang no longer refused.
As for Yuan Gui, he was even more convinced. He had thought that this journey was too long, and Granny Fang would be too tired from walking. Initially, he had wanted to hire a mule cart or donkey cart for their journey outside the city.
However, given that most people still didn't dare to leave the city, especially for such a distant village, Yuan Gui couldn't find a suitable option. He was afraid of wasting more time, so he had no choice but to slowly help Granny Fang walk.
Now that Miss Lu was willing to give them a ride, he felt emboldened to ask for a lift.
With Ying Xi's help, Granny Fang was settled inside the carriage, leaning somewhat uneasily against the soft cushions. She clutched the side of the carriage door and repeatedly thanked Shu Yu.
Yuan Gui, on the other hand, sat at the front of the carriage, taking up the role of a coachman without being asked.
Shu Yu poured Granny Fang some warm water and handed her some snacks before initiating a casual conversation. "I went to the county yamen before leaving the city. I heard that you left early in the morning. Why did it take you so long to get here?"
Holding the warm water, Granny Fang smiled and softly answered, "We went to the Guan family's house first. You know, the family that sheltered us for a while? We bid them farewell and settled the food expenses we owed them. After that, we set off. That's why we're traveling so slowly."
Shu Yu understood. "Is your finances still alright? If it's not enough, I can help."
"Enough, enough, enough," Granny Fang quickly assured. "During this time, both Ah Gui and I helped out at the county yamen. Lord Xia treated us well. Knowing that we didn't have much money, she gives us part of our wages in advance."
The Guan family had taken them in for over ten days, primarily covering their food expenses.
However, they didn't consume much, so the food expenses weren't too high. The advanced wages they received from Lord Xia were enough to cover that.
In fact, they still owed Doctor Mi fees for his medical consultation and medication. However, given that the Guan family was much poorer than the Mi family's medical clinic, and especially considering the collapse of their house during the recent heavy snowfall, they prioritized paying back the Guan family first. They planned to wait a bit before repaying Doctor Mi.
Seeing Granny Fang's contented smile, Shu Yu suddenly combined her image with that of her own grandmother who was miles away.
Her grandmother was also like this. Unless she was truly desperate, she might hesitate a bit. But whenever she had the means, she avoided owing others any favors.
Thinking of her grandmother who was far away, when facing Granny Fang, Shu Yu's expression involuntarily softened.
"It seems Granny Fang and Ah Gui have been doing well at the county yamen during this time. What about the future? Do you plan to continue working there? After all, working at the county yamen is something many people would be eager for. Even when you leave, people will still hold you in high regard."
