Yuangui didn't know how long he had been adrift, but when he woke up, he saw an old woman trying to pull the bamboo raft ashore. There was a large rock blocking the front of the raft, giving the old woman some time to figure out how to get it ashore.
"The old woman was quite old, but fortunately, she still had some strength left. It was just getting slightly bright, and there were not many people nearby. The old woman couldn't find anyone, so she had to work hard to pull me ashore and then used a cart to bring me back to her home."
The old woman had no children or relatives, and she lived alone.
She found a local physician for Yuangui, and his medical skills were quite good. He treated Yuangui's injuries beautifully.
However, his injuries required an explanation, and Yuangui explained that he was a hunter from the mountains. He encountered another hunter who was aiming to shoot a rabbit, but instead of hitting the rabbit, the arrow struck him.
Then, he fell down the slope and broke several bones.
As for the other hunter who shot the arrow, he didn't know if the person didn't notice him or got scared and ran away. When Yuanqui woke up, he was only confronted by another injured wolf.
After scaring away the wolf, Yuanqui quickly climbed onto the wooden raft and floated downstream.
Based on the injuries on Yuangui's body, his explanation made sense. He did indeed get shot with an arrow, luckily it was just a regular arrow used by hunters. The wound on his arm was indeed caused by a wolf bite, and combined with his disheveled appearance and torn clothes, it was all consistent with the appearance of someone rolling down a slope.
In the following days, Yuangui recovered at the old woman's home. His injuries were too severe, and he didn't know what Jiang Kuangyu was planning or where he was, but he had a bad feeling about that man. He thought Jiang Kuangyu might be up to something big, so Yuangui didn't dare to enter the city, fearing he might encounter him. Instead, he stayed in the small village and focused on healing his injuries.
The old woman treated him kindly. Although her home appeared poor, she still provided him with the best possible food.
Yuangui had some money with him, and he gave it all to the old woman, who used it to buy medicine.
He spent nearly half a year recuperating at her home.
It wasn't until March of this year that he was able to resume his martial arts training.
Curious, Shu Yu asked, "Since you recovered, why didn't you return to Dong'an Prefecture?"
Yuangui fell silent for a while before he smiled bitterly, "Firstly, I have no letter of introduction. When I set out as a guard, the escorts' management was centralized."
Of course, he could have asked someone to send a message back.
But...
"Secondly, I grew up without parents, and although I later became a disciple of my master and learned martial arts from him, he was strict, and I had many fellow disciples. Moreover, he died early, so I've never experienced the warmth of having a family in my life. The old woman has been good to me; she saved me and treated me like her own child. I just couldn't bear to leave her alone. Since she's alone, I thought it would be nice to accompany her."
Of course, there was one more thing - he feared that if he returned, Jiang Kuangyu would find out and would never let him go.
So Yuangui ended up staying.
With his strong physique, he could do all the physical work like chopping wood and fetching water for the old woman, and she didn't have to worry about anything. Growing up on his own, he had no trouble with skills like washing clothes and cooking.
When he was severely injured, it was the old woman who took care of him. Now that he had recovered, he could handle all the household chores himself.
The only thing was that Yuangui hardly left the village and didn't go to the county town.
He could go into the mountains to hunt, gather mushrooms, chop wood, and weave baskets, then have someone else sell the goods in the city.
He had no problems in his daily life.
