Meng Yunzheng hurriedly walked, his heart filled with anxiety.
The place had clearly witnessed a great battle. Bloodstains splattered on the ground, walls, and pillars. There were scorch marks in the corners, and a woman's handkerchief had fallen on the gallery, along with two broken wooden sticks.
The escort bureau was eerily quiet. Shu Yu and Meng Yunzheng exchanged glances and headed towards the backyard with the others.
However, they didn't encounter anyone along the way. Some rooms were in disarray, while others seemed untouched.
The kitchen was empty of rice, flour, and oil, most likely taken away by someone.
After searching the place and finding no one, the four gathered again.
"Where did they go?"
Meng Family Escort Bureau should have been prepared for this situation. After all, Meng Pei had come to Chenggu County over a month ago and must have known that they needed a safe escape route. Even though the escort bureau was in disarray, not everyone should have encountered trouble.
Meng Yunzheng pondered for a moment. "Follow me."
He led the way to the firewood room while explaining, "My father mentioned that there's a secret passage and a hidden chamber in the firewood room. It's the most suitable place for a safe escape route."
The secret chamber in the Meng family was passed down from Meng Pei's grandfather and had been kept secret, known only to the selected head of the escort bureau.
In the past, the Meng Family Escort Bureau had a great reputation, not only in Chenggu County but also throughout the entire Changjin Prefecture. They used to have excellent business, escorting valuable goods worth a fortune.
Meng Pei's grandfather had specially built this secret chamber to safeguard those treasures and prevent theft.
However, after a series of unfortunate events, including betrayal from his best brother, the escort disciples left in large numbers. Later, when the responsibility fell to Meng Pei's father, he passed away at a young age, leaving young Meng Pei to take over.
Some experienced uncles didn't accept him and started their own businesses.
Meng Pei proved himself capable and gradually revived the escort bureau. However, to ensure Song Xin's safety, he soon left Chenggu County under the pretext of establishing a separate branch in Tianning County. He stayed there for ten years.
Eventually, he was discovered by Gong Qiu, forcing him to go into hiding for so many years.
In the beginning, it was quite difficult for young Meng Pei to take over the business. Although he gradually stabilized it, the Meng Family Escort Bureau experienced a decline after these events. The escorts were no longer valuable enough to require a hidden chamber.
Thus, the secret chamber in the Meng family had remained unused for a long time.
However, all the family heads of the Meng family knew about it. Meng Pei had informed his younger brother when he handed over the bureau to him.
Others, however, remained unaware of its existence.
Meng Yunzheng knew about it because Meng Pei had mentioned it while they were discussing their escape plan before he left.
Since there was already a place to hide, Meng Yunzheng wasn't so worried about Meng Pei's departure.
"No one is at the Meng family. They must be inside." Even if not everyone was there, at least some of them should be.
Shu Yu heaved a sigh of relief and followed him to the firewood room.
In the hidden passage beneath the firewood room, a group of people huddled together, each one with a pale face.
Meng Han sat on the ground, hugging her knees, looking very despondent.
In her hands, she tightly grasped the dagger that Meng Yunzheng had given her, smiling bitterly to herself.
She never expected that the weapon she thought would be of little use would end up saving her life.
