Meng Yunzheng's lips were tightly pressed as he murmured, "So, it was right for the Fifth Prince to ascend the throne."
If it were the Second or Third Prince, those heartless individuals who treated commoners' lives as nothing, then the people of the kingdom would suffer even more.
Shu Yu took a deep breath. Yes, the Second and Third Princes were morally corrupt and harmed innocent civilians. In this regard alone, they were not worthy of being emperor.
They continued walking, holding the reins of their horses, and their pace was not fast. Their eyes were watchful of their surroundings.
Before they left, the guards had reminded them, "The officials don't have many people right now. Be careful yourselves. There are remnants of bandits hiding in the city. If you find anything suspicious, protect yourselves and immediately find the patrolling guards."
The local officials were limited in number. Some had been sent to besiege a large group of bandits, some were guarding the city gate to prevent any mishaps, and some were searching house by house in the city.
However, these bandits were clearly organized and very cunning. They were hiding somewhere like rats, and the officials couldn't find them.
Originally, neighboring counties and the capital had said they would send more people, but a few days ago, they also encountered harassment from scattered bandits. Although they only experienced some fright and didn't suffer heavy losses like Chenggu County, they couldn't easily withdraw their officials.
Meng Yunzheng expressed his gratitude, "Thank you, you've also worked hard."
Meng Yunzheng couldn't say for sure who these guards really served and whether they were aware of who orchestrated all of this.
At this moment, they saw the guards looking grim, with evident dark circles under their eyes, showing that they were indeed busy and had not rested properly.
Shu Yu and the others continued on their way to the Meng family residence, which was located relatively close to the center of the county.
Now, they encountered more people than they did near the city gate.
Most of these people were selling small vegetables and trinkets from their small stalls or ordinary citizens out shopping.
Their expressions were all haggard, most likely still frightened. They didn't dare to approach Shu Yu and the others, speaking softly as if they were afraid that speaking too loudly would cause trouble.
Shu Yu knew that they had no choice. For their livelihoods, even if the city was still unsafe, they had no choice but to come out to support their families.
Most of the shops on the street were closed, and occasionally, one or two stores selling groceries and grains were still open, but there were only one or two people inside.
The entire street was incredibly quiet, and no one dared to speak loudly. Once their merchandise was sold out, they would quickly pack up and leave.
When they finally arrived at the Meng family residence, all four of them couldn't help but heave a sigh of relief.
The entrance to the Meng Family Escort Bureau was tightly shut. Meng Yunzheng walked forward and knocked on the door. However, as soon as he stepped on the steps, his footsteps froze, and his expression changed.
Shu Yu followed closely behind, "What's wrong?"
Meng Yunzheng's lips were tightly pursed as he looked at the bloodstains on the door lock. "It seems that someone has broken into the Meng family as well."
There were indeed bloodstains on the door lock.
Shu Yu's heart skipped a beat and quickly raised her hand to knock on the door, but there was no response from inside.
She pushed the door with force, and the two doors opened heavily.
However, when they saw the scene inside, their expressions became even more serious.
The entire front yard was in a mess, potted plants scattered on the ground, stone benches overturned, stool legs strewn about, and the wooden weapon racks where the escort disciples trained were cut into two pieces, with no weapons left.
