Qian Fangli was in shock and disbelief. He couldn't wait for the witnesses to finish speaking and pointed at Shu Yu, shouting, "It's her! She did it! Officials, it's her who is framing me!"
Everyone was startled by his sudden scream. All eyes turned to him and then followed his pointing finger to Shu Yu.
Shu Yu's smile faded from her face, replaced by a look of suspicion. Then, she stood up in shock and anger, exclaiming, "Qian Fangli, what do you mean? I am the victim here, and I am the aggrieved party. How come everything you did has now become my fault in your mouth? I haven't said a word yet, and you are already trying to shift the blame onto me. Do you have some kind of mental illness?"
Qian Fangli opened his mouth to speak, but before he could say anything, Shu Yu bombarded him with a series of questions, "Did I ask Zhang Qing to steal the sunflower seeds? Did I order the craftsmen to renovate your tea workshop? Did I instruct the people in Donggu County to spread those rumors? Qian Fangli, you can't just throw accusations around without any restraint. Otherwise, I can sue you again."
Qian Fangli was taken aback, and his body trembled slightly.
Magistrate Peng, who was listening on the sidelines, tightened his lips and felt utterly speechless. This man was really foolish. How could he be so confused as to implicate himself to protect Qian Fangli?
Prefect Magistrate Fei knocked on the table and asked with a serious face, "Qian Fangli, do you have any evidence to support your claims? If not, falsely accusing the village lord will add another crime to your list."
Of course, Qian Fangli had no evidence. The fact that he was brought to the prefectural city by government officials caught him completely off guard, leaving him no time to gather any evidence.
Facing Shu Yu's sneering expression, Qian Fangli could only grit his teeth and apologize, intending to smooth things over for now to avoid further charges.
Thus, he shook his head in frustration and said, "I was talking nonsense just now in the heat of the moment. I didn't mean to falsely accuse you, village lord. Please forgive me."
Shu Yu snorted but didn't dwell on it. She was only here to witness the spectacle and didn't need to say much. The most serious charge was the spreading of rumors.
Prefect Magistrate Fei glanced at her but didn't say anything, continuing with the trial.
After some time, Qian Fangli began to calm down. He answered the questions more coherently. However, he steadfastly denied all the accusations against him, only repeatedly claiming that he was innocent.
Nevertheless, with both witnesses and evidence present, Qian Fangli's denial was futile. Prefect Magistrate Fei didn't have time to waste on him and threatened to use torture if he continued to deny the charges.
Finally, Qian Fangli became frightened and reluctantly admitted to instructing Zhang Qing and renovating the workshop. However, he still refused to acknowledge the rumor.
He was well aware of the seriousness of that accusation. Even if Prefect Magistrate Fei used torture, he wouldn't change his stance. He knew he couldn't afford to admit to that.
Prefect Magistrate Fei frowned. Qian Fangli was right; without solid evidence, it was difficult to prove who had spread the rumor.
The trial had reached a deadlock, so Prefect Magistrate Fei ordered someone to investigate in Donggu County to determine the source of the first rumor.
