Shu Yu didn't need to be too explicit when she spoke; as soon as she opened her mouth, Meng Yunzheng knew what she was referring to. With Ying Xi and Xia Yan guarding outside, this quiet place was suitable for a private conversation.
Having finished eating almost everything, Meng Yunzheng put down his chopsticks and took a few sips of tea before slowly recounting the process.
Listening to his account, Shu Yu couldn't help but be astonished. "You misled Hao Ding Shan, making him believe that the emperor is seriously ill?"
"More or less."
Shu Yu's lips twitched. "You're using the emperor as a pawn, aren't you? This... did the emperor agree to this?"
"Of course. If the emperor didn't agree, who would dare to spread such rumors?" No matter how audacious Meng Yunzheng was, he wouldn't take such a risk. "We delayed the execution of the plan for so long just to wait for the emperor's reply. Prefect Magistrate Fei cooperated with us, under the emperor's orders."
When she heard about the reply, Shu Yu thought about what Xiao Shi asked her earlier.
"What about the letter from the capital? Did it mention anything about Qi Lie and Xiang Weinan? They still haven't replied."
"I came here today to talk about this. After we informed Qi Lie of the unusual situation at Changjin Prefecture, he immediately led people to investigate. It is said that there is a black market there, and Qi Lie infiltrated it. Now... there's still no news from there."
The black market at Changjin Prefecture was entirely different from the one in Jiangyuan County. The latter was more like an underground trading place, while the former was the real hub of crime, filled with dangerous and potentially lethal situations. Once inside, they could be in grave danger at any moment.
Shu Yu couldn't help but take a deep breath, hoping that Qi Lie could complete the mission safely and successfully.
"What about Xiang Weinan?"
At the mention of this, Meng Yunzheng looked somewhat troubled and said helplessly, "Recently, the Xiao family has been closely monitoring him."
Shu Yu was stunned, furrowing her brows. "The Xiao family is keeping an eye on him? Why? Don't tell me they suspect something about Xiao Shi's death?"
"It's not that. The Xiao family wants to use marriage to win him over."
Shu Yu: "... Marriage?"
Meng Yun Zheng explained, "Currently, the emperor is keeping a distance from the Xiang family to avoid arousing suspicion from the Xiao family. However, the Xiao family and the Third Prince believe that there is a great chance to win over the Xiang family through marriage, so they have been trying to maintain the relationship between the two families."
Shu Yu found it incredible. "But Xiao Shi passed away less than half a year ago, and they are already doing this. It's shameless, especially considering they are part of the same family."
Then, she thought of something and said, "But the Xiao family doesn't have any daughters, right?"
She remembered that Xiao Shi was favored by the Third Prince's mother because she was the only daughter in the Xiao family; all the other children were sons.
Meng Yunzheng smiled. "The Xiao family doesn't have any daughters, but they have a cousin."
"Using their cousin to marry Xiang Weinan?"
Meng Yunzheng nodded. "The cousin has been staying at the Xiao family during this time and often visits the Third House to take care of her bedridden third uncle. She uses the excuse to chat and keep Xiang Weinan company, but in reality, she's trying to tempt him."
After Xiao Shi's death, Xiang Weinan frequently visited the Xiao family to prevent them from targeting her parents.
