The steward of the Wu family declined the offer. Before the young master left, he had instructed them to focus on building relationships gradually and to be adaptable. Seeing the shop bustling with customers crowded at the entrance, the steward immediately said, "Shopkeeper Wei must be busy today; I won't disturb you any longer. I'll deliver the gift and then head back to Donggu County. Since it's been a while, I'll grant a day off to Hu Geng so you can catch up."
Wei Ronghua exchanged polite words and watched the steward depart in a carriage. Then, he turned to look at Hu Geng, who seemed to have a different spirit about him after half a month. He seemed even more spirited and enthusiastic compared to before.
Previously, when Hu Geng worked as an assistant and an apprentice at the pastry shop, though he led a fulfilling life, it somehow felt lacking compared to now.
It seemed that Hu Geng enjoyed working at the Wu family's horse ranch, dealing with horses and mules; that was what he truly loved. Wei Ronghua patted his shoulder and said, "Work well at the Wu family from now on."
He didn't plan to say much for now; they could catch up on old times after finishing their work in the evening.
With that in mind, Wei Ronghua took out the keys to his home, intending to let Hu Geng head back first. However, before he could hand over the keys, Hu Geng whispered, "Master, when I arrived, I saw the Ge family from the Hong Xiang gou over there."
Frowning slightly, Wei Ronghua followed his gaze and indeed spotted a carriage not far away. There were many carriages around the area, almost blocking the entire street. Even when the great bull came out and led everyone to park by the side, the traffic was still constant.
These were all carriages from wealthy families. With their servants and maids, they didn't need to stand in line personally; they could just wait inside their carriages. If they were interested in the lottery, they could get off their carriages when their turn came.
Given this, Wei Ronghua didn't pay much attention to the inconspicuous carriage of the Ge family.
Unexpectedly, the Ge family traveled all the way from Donggu County to this place.
Hu Geng warily asked, "Master, do you think they might be causing trouble?"
Wei Ronghua pondered for a moment and shook his head, "They don't have the courage for that."
Firstly, they weren't locals of the city, and even if they wanted to act arrogantly, they wouldn't have the chance.
Secondly, this was the Village Lord Lu's store. Even the Prefect Magistrate himself sent people to deliver a gift. Who in their right mind would dare to cause trouble here today?
Perhaps their stares were too obvious, as the Ge Dong beside the carriage also turned their heads to look at Wei Ronghua, but their gazes were filled with complexity.
Ge Dong wanted to see if Wei Ronghua would become miserable after leaving Donggu County, and if the Lu Township Lord would regret hiring him. In Ge Dong's mind, Wei Ronghua was stubborn and lacked discipline, so he couldn't achieve anything significant.
However, since Wei Ronghua left Donggu County half a month ago, the business at the Hong Xiang gou had visibly declined. Ge Dong didn't want to admit or acknowledge that it was related to Wei Ronghua, convincing himself that it was due to some old customers being cautious after a change of store manager. He believed things would improve soon.
But now, seeing the blazing popularity of the Luji store he began to realize that he might have made a mistake.
