Second Master Shu made a mistake while working at the estate, and the local officials, who already held a grudge against him, took the opportunity to send him back to do manual labor on the fields. This dealt a heavy blow to his already crumbling mental state, pushing him over the edge.
But the troubles didn't end there. With no work at the estate, the Second Master's life, which had improved, returned to its former misery. The First Mistress and her faction were now at odds with them, and it was only natural that they would add salt to the wound.
Unable to cope, Second Master Shu jumped into the river.
Luckily, it was a hot day, and he wasn't frozen to death. Moreover, there were people swimming downstream, who rescued him. However, although he survived physically, his mind was no longer sound.
Putting down the letter, Shu Yu could already imagine that Second Master Shu's situation was a disaster for the Second branch of the Shu family. His days in the future would likely be even more difficult.
But all of this was no longer her concern. Shu Yu put the letter away and prepared to write back to Fang Xiyue.
She was well aware that the new emperor had no intention of granting a general amnesty for the realm. She knew that even before she was exiled, and she also knew that there wouldn't be a general amnesty for a long time to come.
In the past, the previous emperor had granted general amnesty on multiple occasions due to various reasons.
He considered it an act of benevolence and a demonstration of imperial grace. However, for many people, it was a disaster.
Although the released criminals were not allowed to return to their hometowns, it didn't prevent some of the extremely wicked individuals from remaining incorrigible. They even believed that committing crimes was inconsequential because they would return after a general amnesty. As a result, they sought every opportunity to seek revenge against their victims.
After each general amnesty, there was always a surge of crimes, leaving the common people in misery.
The new emperor was well aware of these downsides, so he intended to reduce the frequency of general amnesties. He was cautious about the matter and would only grant pardons under specific conditions and within certain limits.
Shu Yu knew all of this, so after her exile, she didn't wait for the opportunity of a general amnesty because she knew it wouldn't come. She acted decisively and found a way to escape from the exile.
Now that the new emperor had been on the throne for more than half a year, there had been numerous major events at court. Many people had realized the situation.
Therefore, Ma Lu's decision to work with Master Cheng was a very wise choice.
After writing the letter, Shu Yu went to the storage room and prepared some gifts for Fang Xiyue.
The next day happened to be the Mid-Autumn Festival. Last year, Shu Yu was on her way back to the capital and missed the reunion day.
This year, everyone was present, and it was a true family reunion.
In the morning, Da Niu distributed Mid-Autumn Festival gifts and then hurried back to the county.
Later, Lu Da Song and Li Shi arrived, and Liang Shi and Lu Si Xing came with their children after noon. As for Lu Sanzhu and Yuan ShanChuan, they would come after finishing work.
In the evening, the whole Lu family gathered around Grandma Lu.
Not only the Lu family but also the Meng family, Zhao family, and even Lan Hua's fiancé, Yu Fenglin, were there.
Yu Fenglin was all by himself, so the Lu family was livelier than ever.
The Lu family had decorated their home with lanterns and festive decorations. Even if they didn't go out, there was a joyful atmosphere at home.
Shu You and Meng Han arranged everything, and the house had an especially energetic spirit these days. They were full of enthusiasm.
