Ruan Shi seemed to have inquired thoroughly about County Princess Zhang's affairs. She was particularly concerned about the trouble caused by the siblings who intentionally came to cause problems for her daughter.
"That girl, after marrying Zhang Maolin, caused quite a stir in the Zhang family. She had several conflicts with County Princess Zhang. Zhang Maolin was completely under the control of his new wife and stood on her side. Normally, this wouldn't be a big deal, and no one knew about the girl's previous pregnancy. But that girl kept in contact with her former lover even after marriage."
Shu Yu didn't know what to say; it seemed like the saying "like attracts like" was quite fitting here.
Ruan Shi continued, "Not only did she maintain contact, but she also became more brazen with time, perhaps thinking that Zhang Maolin was gullible. As a result, Zhang Maolin couldn't control his temper and caught them together in bed. With his impulsive nature, he couldn't help himself and grabbed a knife from the kitchen, stabbing both of them to death."
Shu Yu was shocked, "He killed them?"
Ruan Shi nodded; she was somewhat apprehensive. When County Princess Zhang and her brother came to their house to cause trouble before, it was fortunate that Ying Dong had intervened, or they might have resorted to violence due to her sister's status.
"This matter caused quite a stir. If he had only killed that girl, people might have thought she deserved it, and with County Princess Zhang's status, Zhang Maolin might have escaped punishment. But killing both the adulterer and the guy was too much, especially since the guy's family had some influence in the Changjin Prefecture. They were prominent people, and there was no way they would let it go."
The adulterer's family sought justice because they were prominent and influential, and their son had an affair outside the marriage. Even though he did something wrong, it didn't mean they would let it slide after his death.
Zhang Maolin had taken two lives, and he was promptly sentenced to death.
County Princess Zhang was merely a titular figure with no real power or connections.
She couldn't save Zhang Maolin, and she was also held responsible by the victim's family.
With her elderly parents at home crying and urging her to find a solution to save her brother, and the victim's family demanding compensation, County Princess Zhang, who had no abilities in the first place, found that people who were once close to her were now distancing themselves and unwilling to help.
In the end, Zhang Maolin's guilt was undeniable, and he was imprisoned.
County Princess Zhang was obligated to compensate the families of the two victims, but her family couldn't afford such a large sum of money. Consequently, the victim's family sought her for compensation.
Originally, County Princess Zhang's status was high in her husband's family, and she could make decisions without question. However, because of this incident, she almost got divorced by her husband's family.
However, she was still a princess and had some status, so her husband's family didn't have the qualification to do so.
But her days at home could be imagined.
Seeing her current appearance, with her clothes looking dull and her face haggard, accompanied by only one maid, Ruan Shi felt that County Princess Zhang deserved her fate.
"I heard from Zhang Maolin's former neighbors that he used to be well-behaved and had a good temper. However, after his sister became a county princess, the entire Zhang family changed. Zhang Maolin stopped studying and working and started causing trouble day by day. Now, he's reaping the consequences of his reckless behavior."
