Meng Qi heard the words and his facial muscles tightened, lips pressed tightly.
Yes, Meng Han ran away from home, and she did leave a letter behind.
She left early yesterday morning, and the letter was discovered by the Tao Shi at noon.
If they had sent someone to chase her immediately, they could have caught up with her in the capital before the city gates closed last night.
However, upon seeing the letter, Tao Shi not only didn't chase after her, but also got angry, blaming Meng Han for being immature.
Tao Shi thought that her daughter became disobedient after going to the city, and Tao Qin she was hurt and wronged by Shu Yu, who forcibly brought her back.
After returning, Tao Shi wanted to comfort her and, knowing that she liked the jade flute her uncle had obtained a while ago, she wanted to give it to her.
That jade flute was brought back by Meng Xiaoshu a few months ago after escorting a shipment. Meng Han cherished it dearly.
Tao Qin also saw it and was envious. Now that she had the chance to get her hands on it, she was naturally delighted.
Tao Shi asked Meng Han to bear the pain of parting with the flute and understand Tao Qin's feelings, and Meng Han was so furious that she almost exploded. Thinking about the slap and the words Shu Yu said, Meng Han was itching to take action and ended up slapping Tao Qin without hesitation.
Tao Shi erupted on the spot and instinctively raised her hand to slap back, but Meng Han's movements were agile, and she dodged it.
However, the fact that Tao Shi's slap missed completely left Meng Han thoroughly chilled.
She didn't want to stay with Tao Shi any longer, nor did she want to acknowledge her as her mother.
Still, even so, before leaving, Meng Han left a letter, so they wouldn't search for her everywhere.
Little did she know that Tao Shi was still angry and had no intention of looking for her. Tao Shi even thought that Meng Han was just throwing a tantrum, saying she was going to the city to find her elder brother. With her small and inexperienced self, how could she have the courage to venture out? It was entirely impossible.
Tao Shi wasn't worried, so she delayed until the evening.
Meng Han hadn't returned, and Tao Shi finally became anxious. She hurriedly went to find Meng Qi, who was studying at the academy, to discuss countermeasures.
Meng Qi was shocked when he heard the news. His thirteen-year-old sister had never been to a place farther than the city, and that was when she went with her family. Now she ran off alone?
Unlike Tao Shi, Meng Qi cared a lot about his sister.
Without a second thought, he wanted to ride a horse and chase after her, but the city gates were already closed, and he didn't have the means to have them opened for him.
He spent the whole night restless at a small inn near the city gates, hoping that nothing had happened to Meng Han and that she was safely resting in the city with Meng Yunzheng.
When the city gates opened this morning, Meng Qi was the first to rush out and head for the city.
Therefore, Meng Qi looked quite exhausted at this moment, and the bloodshot in his eyes was evident.
Thankfully, Meng Han was alright. He sat on the steps, feeling a bit drained, and rubbed his forehead.
Aunt He was a bit worried about him. "Are you alright?"
Meng Qi looked up, smiled at her, and waved his hand, saying, "I'm fine, just resting for a bit."
"Are you going to chase after Young Master Meng? They left an hour ago."
Meng Qi shook his head. "No, there's no guarantee I'll catch up."
Although he didn't like Meng Yunzheng, the "child from another family," he had to admit that he felt relieved when Meng Han was with him.
This man was a scholar, well-traveled, and had been to many places. With him around, Meng Han might get a chance to broaden her horizons.
However, after this incident, Meng Qi had a very clear understanding of Tao Shi's attitude towards the Tao family.
His mother had gone too far this time.
If this continued, the family would fall apart.
