When the carriage left the city, the commotion near the bulletin board grew louder. The officials pasted the list with the names of the candidates.
The examinees crowded around, searching for their names.
Someone from the outskirts couldn't see and asked loudly, "Who is the top scorer?"
"Meng Yun Zheng!"
"Wow, it's him again."
"I heard he was the top scorer in the county exam too. Now, he topped the prefectural exam, isn't that a double top scorer?"
"Where did Meng Yun Zheng come from? I've never heard of him before. It seems like he has never taken an exam before, and this is his first time, but he managed to get a double top scorer?"
"I heard he's quite handsome."
People discussed enthusiastically. Some candidates found their names and cheered loudly, while others who didn't see their names started crying in disappointment.
Meanwhile, the officials from the government were preparing to announce the results with gongs and drums.
Meng Yunzheng was the top scorer, a momentous occasion. The government officials naturally fought over the opportunity to do so.
Thus, two government officials with gongs and drums found their way to the small courtyard where Meng Yunzheng rented, and many people had gathered behind them.
Hearing the sound outside, Aunt He's heart skipped a beat. She quickly wiped her hands and went out to greet them.
The neighbors immediately shouted, "Aunt He, why are you still standing there? Call out Young Master Meng. He got the top score!"
Aunt He widened her eyes. It was the top scorer again.
Oh my goodness, Young Master Meng is amazing.
"Aunt He, move aside quickly." Someone couldn't stand her hesitation and pushed her to the side. Then, they looked inside and called out, "Young Master Meng, Young Master Meng."
Aunt He suddenly came to her senses and hurriedly said, "Young Master Meng is not at home. He had something urgent and left the city."
"What? Left the city?"
At this time? He left so early, especially during such an important moment when everyone else was bathing and dressing up, waiting to check the results. Young Master Meng is really daring.
The two officials were also surprised. They thought they came to report the good news to the top scorer, which might earn them some benefits. But they didn't expect him to be absent.
Fortunately, Aunt He had already realized the situation and quickly handed them the money pouch that Meng Yunzheng had left behind before he left.
"Two officials, you've worked hard. This is the reward Young Master Meng asked me to prepare for you. When he comes back, I will let him know."
The money pouch was quite heavy, indicating that there was a considerable amount of money inside.
The two officials were satisfied, and they said to Aunt He, "Alright, then tell Young Master Meng when he returns that we will leave now."
"Sure, take care, sirs."
The officials left, but the others stayed behind, eager to get some information from Aunt He.
However, Aunt He quickly closed the courtyard gate.
As Meng Yunzheng and the others were completely unaware that their courtyard was surrounded, they left the city and headed straight for Zhong Village.
Meng Yunzheng finally told Shu Yu about his meeting with the leader of Dongqing Temple.
"We had a chat after the prefectural exam. It turns out that she has been traveling to different places in the southwest since she left Dong'an Prefecture. She also visited nearby counties but didn't return to Dongqing Temple."
Shu Yu's lips twitched. She didn't even go home when he was almost there.
"Why did she end up going to Zhong Village?"
Meng Yunzheng paused for a moment.
Then he chuckled, "I led her there. Didn't I send you a letter saying that I would detain her? If I hadn't led her to Zhong Village, she would probably have arrived in the capital by now."
