After seeing off Meng Pei and the Xiao Shi, everyone returned to the city gate and went about their own business.
Shu Yu also quietly opened a shop in the county town. It was not a very large shop and was located on Ningshui Street, which she bought.
She stocked Sunflower seeds and sunflower oil, but business wasn't doing very well.
After all, these were unusual items that people had not seen before, so most of them were just observing for now. Moreover, due to the recent death of the former emperor, Shu Yu hadn't promoted the shop extensively. Many people didn't even know what the shop was selling.
Shu Yu hired two articulate assistants to help introduce the products.
However, the prices were a bit high. The sunflower seeds were manageable, but the sunflower oil was more expensive than ordinary vegetable oil. Vegetable oil itself wasn't cheap, and with the sunflower oil being even more costly, not many common people were willing to buy it.
But Shu Yu was not in a hurry. The workshop was just starting, and the production quantity was not high either. After sending some to the capital, there was even less available for sale. If the business were to really take off, she might not be able to keep up with the demand.
However, after a few days, both Liang Shi and Lu Sixing came to her, expressing their desire to restock the products.
Shu Yu looked puzzled, and Lu Sixing explained, "Let's forget about the sunflower oil for now, but the sunflower seeds are indeed very delicious and fragrant. They are also convenient to carry. We want to take some and sell them in Peach Blossom Forest. You know, there are mostly wealthy young ladies, young masters, and quite a few scholars there. They have money and leisure time and are always interested in unique and one-of-a-kind items. So, we want to give it a try."
Liang Shi nodded in agreement, "Rest assured, we have already talked to your third uncle about this. He is in charge of Peach Blossom Forest now and can make things easier for us."
Peach Blossom Forest was originally not restricted to outsiders, but there were still some rules for selling items there.
If it was just a small basket selling some trinkets, like Lan Hua had done before with her self-made hair accessories, it wouldn't be a big deal and wouldn't disturb others.
But if it was a small stall or something with a strong odor, or something that couldn't be considered high-end, it wouldn't be allowed.
Melon seeds had not appeared there before, and because they had shells, it could create some trash. So, Liang Shi had informed Lu Sanzhu in advance.
Lu Sanzhu could make the decision, but he understood social etiquette very well now. As it concerned his own business, he reported it to the Ji family before agreeing.
The Ji family had tasted the sunflower seeds and liked them very much, so they bought two catties.
As for the shells, they were indeed small and not easy to clean up. But the young ladies and young masters in Peach Blossom Forest were all refined individuals and wouldn't litter casually. Unless they were those ill-mannered and wasteful offspring, there weren't many such people in Peach Blossom Forest, and even without sunflower seed shells, they would throw other things around, so it wouldn't make much difference.
Ji family agreed, and Liang Shi and Lu Sixing came immediately to talk to Shu Yu.
"It's almost New Year, right? I heard Ah Yu say that sunflower seeds are also good as New Year's gifts. That's why we came up with this idea."
This idea was suggested by Lu Sixing and discussed with her husband, Yuan Shanchuan, and they both thought it was a good one.
Now Quan Quan was already a grown-up, and after he became good friends with Xiao Songle, the two of them stuck together and played together every day.
Xiao Songle currently lived in the Meng family, where there were servants specially taking care of him.
Because Meng Yunzheng was going to study, the Meng family's servants would drive a carriage with Xiao Songle to find Quan Quan every day. They would either go to the Yuan family or visit Shu Yu's home. Quan Quan was always surrounded by people, and Lu Sixing didn't take him out much anymore.
